Abstract

Diet plays an important role in the prevention and control of diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Persons suffering from these disorders are being restricted to certain diets to control the Body Mass Index (BMI) and blood glucose level. In this study the effect of designed diet on BMI of obese and diabetic subjects has been studied. The level of plasma glucose of diabetic subjects in response to the designed diet has also been analyzed. One group of diabetic subjects was treated with only drug and the second group was treated with prescribed drug as well as designed diet simultaneously. All the obese subjects were treated with the designed diet only. The BMI of drug treated diabetic subjects improved in case of 11 and 15 per cent of subjects after 30 and 60 days of treatments respectively whereas in case of subjects treated with drug and diet, the BMI declined due to weight loss in case of 43 and 59 per cent of subjects respectively after 30 and 60 days. The fasting blood glucose level of drug treated diabetic subjects declined from higher value towards normal value in case of 19 and 28 per cent of subjects after 30 and 60 days of treatment. The post prandial plasma glucose level of both drug and diet treated subjects also significantly declined after treatment for 60 days. The designed diet greatly influenced in reducing the BMI of diet treated obese subjects both after 30 and 60 days of treatment irrespective of sex, income and food habit of the subjects.
