Intestinal disaccharidase activities became of particular interest after reports on the association of malabsorption and deficiencies of certain enzymes. Somewhat later investigations of patients with protein-calorie malnutrition (or kwashiorkor) showed that in 60 to 65 per cent of these patients the diarrhoea was secondary to lactase deficiency which was generally attributed to protein deprivation.
