In the recent years, there has been an increasing recognition of the importance of millets as the substitutes for major cereal crops. Rachie considered the millets as the crops that have the potential for contributing to increased food production in both developing and developed regions of the world. In Orissa, millets are next to rice in their importance as cereals. As a large part of the upland area of the state is under riskprone rainfed agriculture, some of the millets are the crops of choice by virtue of their high yield stability.
