Seasonal variations in the incidence of a disease is one of the important issues in epidemiological studies. Use of specific statistical tests to detect such variation is widespread. Since powers or efficiencies of most of these tests are not known, criterion efficiencies of twelve original or modified tests have been calculated, keeping the most sophisticated and powerful Walter-Elwood test as the criterion. Suggestions are made regarding choice of a test for small, moderate and large samples. Keywords

In this study 31 women attending psychiatric clinic, who reported passing of vaginal discharge were studied in order to determine the nature and frequency of symptoms considered to have been 'caused' by their passing of vaginal discharge and discuss whether there is a female counter part of the male dhat syndrome. About one third of the subjects who reported passing (non pathological) vaginal discharge were bound to harbour the mis-belief that passing WDPV was harmful to their health and that it was causing somatic symptoms in them. This phenomena resembles dhat syndrome in men only in being related to the loss of a vital fluid, but other differences have been discussed. Keywords

With the objective of integrating the mental health into general health care services, National Institute of Mental Health&Neuro Sciences, (NIMHANS) has started one week training in basic mental health care for multipurpose workers (MPW). The present paper evaluates the perceived mental health skills of MPWs in mental health care after one week's training. The result reveals significant gain in perceived management skills of the subjects after the one week training. The implication of the training programme in the context of implementation of National Mental Health Programme for India is also discussed. Keywords

This study investigated the relative efficacy of two short form methods of the Bhatia's test of Intelligence as an estimate of the Full Scale IQ on a sample of 251 psychiatric patients. Correlations between the full scale IQ and the IQ obtained by using both methods were estimated. In addition, the accuracy of both methods in classification of patients was also assessed. Murthy's short scale scoring procedure was found to be a good approximation of the full length IQ on Bhatia's test. Keywords

In spite of having intelligence and regular class room teaching a significant percentage of children have reading disorders. 25 such students were identified and were divided randomly into 5 groups. Each group was given 25 sessions of remedial education. Remedial education consisted of teaching students the basic sight words, decoding skills and regular exercise based on their current level of reading achievement. The children were encouraged to monitor their own progress and verbal reinforcements were used to motivate them. The post assessment results indicate that there was significant improvement in reading skills after the remedial education. The strategies used and the implications of the study are discussed. Keywords
