Abstract

With the object of providing mental health services in rural areas by involving the community in organising the services, four taluk headquarters were selected at a distance ranging from 50 to 115 km from NIMHANS. Satellite clinics, at Kanakapura (50 km), Maddur (85 km), Madhugiri (115 km) and Gauribidanur (85 km) were started in 1981. The community involvement helped in creating better awareness about mental illness. Epileptic patients predominated in all the four places. Under the existing circumstances and poor resources available, the professionals can effectively provide services to the neglected population of the rural areas by starting extension services as one of the innovative approaches.

Abstract

Nursing diagnosis is gained popularity and generated controversy, Nursing diagnosis has the potential for defining and organising nursing knowledge and practice. Various views of different authors were taken into consideration to see the feasibility and utility into the professional growth through patient care. Although the concept originated in 1950, yet full swing practice of nursing diagnosis is awaited.

Abstract

With the objective of integrating the mental health into general health care services, National Institute of Mental Health&Neuro Sciences, (NIMHANS) has started one week training in basic mental health care for multipurpose workers (MPW). The present paper evaluates the perceived mental health skills of MPWs in mental health care after one week's training. The result reveals significant gain in perceived management skills of the subjects after the one week training. The implication of the training programme in the context of implementation of National Mental Health Programme for India is also discussed.
