The engineering education has gone through several re-engineering efforts under various names. Some of the popular names in the past have been sustainable engineering and concurrent engineering. While each of these names has a different flavor to it, the underlying principle of effective engineering education has been its ability to provide practical and functional learning opportunities to students. Experiential learning, which encompasses all types of practice-based learning opportunities, is the founding principle of a successful engineering education model. This paper presents an approach to enhance active and collaborative learning in 'Metal Cutting' laboratory by the undergraduate students of V Semester Industrial&Production Engineering using the concept of "Design of Experiments", to study the effects of various parameters on machining performance. The paper also describes the assessment of program outcome '3b' of ABET criteria through laboratory experiment.Keywords

The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) in India has specified specific graduate attributes for post graduate program in engineering. In B V B College of Engineering & Technology, Hubballi, the Production Management PG program has made an attempt to design and conduct the course project from last two academic years in the core course "Project Management" at 1st semester level, which has been designed to address the graduate attribute 7 related to "Project Management and Finance". Based on this the program outcome for our PG program is defined as "Ability to carry feasibility study and evaluate projects considering economical and financial factors". Keeping this outcome in mind, the course project has been conducted addressing feasibility study, economical and financial factors as mentioned in attribute 7. The students were made to work on this course project for the duration of 12 weeks, which included activities like industrial visit, literature review, preliminary study, feasibility study, facets analysis, report submission and oral presentation. The evaluation process for this course project was rubrics based consisting of two different outcome elements and related performance indicators to address particularly the graduate attribute-7. The work carried out by the students focuses completely on the analysis of facets of projects from marketing analysis to ecological analysis. The conduct of course project in the core course like project management really differentiates the learning of post graduate level to that of undergraduate level as more work is being carried on the analysis part during the process of course project. The percentage attainment of each outcome element addressing the attribute-7 for both the academic years i.e 2013-14 and 2014-15 has been compared.Keywords

Blooms Taxonomy is a framework for classifying statements of what faculty expect or intend students to learn as a result of instruction. Bloom's Taxonomy provides an important framework for faculty to focus on higher order thinking, by providing a hierarchy of levels, this taxonomy can assist faculty in designing performance tasks, crafting questions for conferring with students, and providing feedback on student work. Achieving higher order of learning in some courses is challenging task for a faculty so an effort is made in this course to how a remembering level concept can be taken to analyzing level through an open ended activity.
In a process manufacturing the variation occurs because of part to part variation and measurement variation in turn the measurement variation is due to operator involving in measurement (Reproducibility) or the variation due to the gage(Repeatability) and it is popularly known as Gage R&R so this concept, students study in the metrology and quality engineering subject which will be addressing only remembering level of blooms taxonomy so in order to give an experiential learning and in order to achieve higher level of blooms level an open ended activity is designed for IV sem B. E. Industrial and Production Engineering students how these concepts used in the industry I. e. Studying the gage R&R in "Metrology and Quality Engineering" laboratory using Measurement System Analysis (MSA) tool, wherein the students need to design an experiment in order to analyze the gage R&R in terms of the part to be required to measure the data, instruments to be used and number of data to be collected etc. After the collection of data, gage R&R (Repeatability and Reproducibility) has been analyzed using MINITAB software and the capability of gage to be inspected was assessed by the students. Through this open ended activity, the ABET 3b program outcome was measured and analyzed.

Technical education programs have embraced experiential learning as a true learning methodology for students to obtain occupational skills valued by employers. Programs have integrated classroom instruction with laboratory experiences to provide students a significant opportunity to learn. A fundamental component in professional education is the link between theory and practice. However, many students in professional education programs experience a lack of coherence between theory and practice, which is often described as the theory practice gap. This work is apart of "Bridging the Gap" in metrology and quality engineering course, designed for the undergraduate students of VI Semester Industrial and Production Engineering of BVBCET, Hubli, an autonomous institute. Two problem statements were given to the students; one was on the process capability analysis of machines and another on the construction of control chart for variables, which they have to solve after conducting the experiments in machine shop in batches. The students had to chalk out the necessary information to conduct the experiment like profile, sample size, subgroup size and finally analyze the experimental data to decide whether machine is capable to meet the specifications of part and detect the presence of assignable or un assignable causes of variation using process capability analysis and control chart respectively. After the completion of this exercise, the students could realize the importance of process capability analysis and control charts in the manufacturing industries. This activity was step forward in bridging the gap between theory and lab through experiential learning. The performance indicators (PIs) of the ABET program outcome '3b' were underlying the motivators while designing the present experiential learning activity.Keywords

In today's higher education system, the concept of specialization plays a vital role in the career development of engineering students across the world. Meanwhile, the requirement for automation engineers in manufacturing sector is increasing continuously due to upgradation of the technology in today's industrial scenario. The methodology of theme based curriculum design and its integration to the existing curriculum along with the assessment pattern have been explained throughout the paper. The results and attainment of performance indicators have been analyzed. It is found that the percentage attainment have improved from initial conventional laboratory experiments to final open-ended experiment of laboratory course leading to active learning among students.Keywords
