Students today have instant access to information through technology and the web, and they are able to manage their own acquisition of knowledge through informal learning, As a result, traditional teaching and learning methods are becoming less effective at engaging students and motivating them to achieve the desired goals. Today's students are presented with content-centric assignments that meet standards but lack a real-world context and opportunities for active participation. So a step was initiated to enhance the student learning by introducing tool based learning methodology, which provides the platform for better understanding of real world problems and able to develop deeper knowledge of the subject they are studying.
In this paper we discuss how we carried out the process of tool based learning approach for information retrieval(IR) course, This methodology looks at building a prototype for information retrieval applications which confine to recommendations, classifications or clustering based technics and using web as a medium for building up good interactive user friendly applications. This TBL provides a flavour of combining different technics of IR, where students need to have active participation; the overall results show the better performance in their thinking and problem solving skills. The semester end results reveal that they have achieved a good understanding of the concepts, techniques and tools that were used in the course to develop prototype applications.

This case study of categorized laboratory is basically to explore the effectiveness of structured enquiry in database application laboratory to encourage inquiry for the undergraduate students of Information Science & engg department. Enquiry based learning approaches enhance student's learning as compared to the conventional method. In enquiry based approach all the experiments are classified into four categories such as demonstration, exercise, structured enquiry and open ended experiment. During the year 2012-13 and 2013-14 batches, students are compared with respect to their exam score, understanding of concepts, analyzing and implementing the studied concepts, database design and the nature of problem statement given in the laboratory.
All the batches are given with different set of unique problem statements to avoid plagiarism and that really encouraged the students to study DBMS subject in depth, and also stimulated them to choose data mining and information retrieval subject, data engineering theme to build the capstone projects in their higher semesters.
This enquiry-based laboratory conduction has enhanced the students learning skills, stimulated to acquire content knowledge, problem solving skills, asking questions, and coming up with alternate design approaches for given problem. The results of this two years study give us a clear differentiation that inquiry based approach is better for students to acquire in depth knowledge and problem solving skills as compared to traditional approach where there was no categorization of lab experiments.

The effectiveness of engineering education depends on the teaching and learning process adapted by the faculty and students. Lot of research is going on to effectively educate the undergraduate students, among that one of the methodology which we have followed is to categorize lab experiments as Exercise, Enquiry based and Open Ended learning. In the proposed paper a background study is carried out on how to develop problem solving, thinking and analysis skills among students and more importantly most of the students face difficulty in applying the concepts for developing applications or projects. Hence considering the above facts we carried out a study to bridge this gap with a novel approach of categorization. This practice was carried out on Distributed and cloud computing lab (DCC) as a case study for Information science and Engineering students of final year.
A new technique to measure the effectiveness of students learning in DCC lab based on program outcome attainment for engineering laboratory education and affordances of the pedagogical features of the lab.The results interpret that the novel approach adopted has improved performance of students as compared to the traditional learning methods.

This paper examines one aspect of the curricular change process undertaken in the undergraduate level in which the inclusive learning community structure changes and support the learning of the students. Many different kinds of student learning are evident in our interview data. A major benefit for students is learning to work in teams, soft skills, directed learning and while all of them spoke of the difficulties involved. The initial changes of the courses are integrated as a course project where the students are interviewed the different aspects of the course in-order to achieve the graduate attributes. In this paper we describe how we carried out the development of integrated course project, So this integrated course project looks at building a network domain applications and realization of basic networking protocols. This integrated course project provides a flavour of combining the Computer Network and Operating System Courses. The conduction of the assessment realizes the students to enquiry the courses in depth and correlate the concepts to a real world problems. It places the responsibility on the individual student to initiate and direct the learning process which provides the contextual environment that makes learning exciting and relevant for the appropriate course. It also provides an opportunity for students to explore technical problems from system level perspective to implementation level. The integrated course also emphasis considerable use of computers in an active learning environment that stressed teaming and other quality tools.Keywords
