Abstract

Web programming is an interesting and important course, which commands innovative methods to reach the students in large. This paper describes an approach to effective teaching of this course in our department. The traditional method of teaching this course includes the use of black board and power point presentations. But to enable students to apply the learned concepts in real time projects, the usage of different constructs was demonstrated live in the classrooms using a computer projector. The highlight of the course was to make students in batches of 2 or 3 to develop a simple web portal and host it on internet. The whole process enhanced student learning, their confidence to take up live projects and fostered communication skills and human relationship. This indirectly led to the development of better student community in the department, hence the institute.

Abstract

Students and educators are the main components of any teaching system wherein educators play an important role. The vision of every educator is to make every student a successful IT professional in the current industry scenario. To meet the requirements of the IT industry, we need to enhance the quality of our students through effective teaching. Many studies have shown that life skills along with technical skill decide the success of a person. Hence, an attempt is made to improve both technical and life skills of students through regular engineering courses, instead of having separate courses on communication skills and ethical values. The idea of enhancing the skills of students through our proposed approach is experimented for the "Algorithm Design and Analysis" course. Our experimented process of effective teaching through programming assignments has given a very satisfactory result and the students are also happy about their accomplishments in the course.

Abstract

In order to emphasize research at post graduatelevel it is essential for making teachers and students aware of the importance of acquiring essential research skills along with technical skills through the project based learning activity to promote post graduate students like Master of Computer Applications towards research. An attempt is made to promote their interest towards computer networks using Network Simulator-2 to build their own network topology, protocol and performance analysis of different protocols, which they have studied in theoretical approach can be simulated using NS-2 tool and a prototype of various network topologies can be built to enhance interest among students to carry out research based projects using NS-2.

Abstract

Object oriented techniques incorporate different software engineering techniques that can be used in development of all projects. Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a structured method which involves formal methodologies, and has made significant contribution in defining set of methodologies that can be applied to any software engineering effort. Our approach is to make students experience the real time application of Object Oriented Modeling and Design methods using supportive tools that help them to have a hands-on experience with the operational software design. This helps students to use emerging object oriented techniques to improve their knowledge on object oriented modeling and design, problem solving skills and team work skills that can be converted into useful computer applications.

Abstract

Mentorship in institutions of higher education supports personal and professional development of faculty as they transit into new roles as teaching faculty. Mentorship programs attempt to address several types of common needs among new faculty, such as professional development, emotional support, intellectual community, role models, accountability, sponsorship, access to opportunities, and substantive feedback. New faculty members start their profession without any formal training in teaching. But teaching is a skill which can be best acquired through constant hard work, observation and interaction with senior faculty members. In an attempt to better train young faculty, they were made to choose a senior faculty as their mentor. This mentorship programme benefitted young faculty in several dimensions.

Abstract

Campus placement is a buzzword these days in most of the university colleges, especially in engineering institutions. Students, parents, faculty and even the management consider the placement as a vital parameter in judging the quality of the institution. Further from the students' perspective, it is good and safe to get placed in some company in the campus itself. The reasons are twofold. Firstly, high competition in off-campus placements and the second is the recession due to economic and business fluctuations in a global scenario, which obviously decreases the number of employment opportunities. In an attempt to address these challenges, few innovative steps were taken to increase the number of placements. The outcome of this resulted in all time record placements in our institution. In this paper, challenges faced in placements and certain remedial measures to meet the same are discussed.
