A Mosaic Technique: Pique Assiette
Subscribe/Renew Journal
Mosaic is an art which has been used as a decorative coating method since ancient times. Many materials, such as stone, ceramics, and glass, and different techniques can be used in making mosaics. Pique assiette, picassiette, or Trencadis is a form of mosaic where randomly or irregularly broken ceramics and porcelain, glass buttons, and trinkets are used. The art was first seen in the works of Antoni Gaudi, who was a pioneer of the Art Nouveau movement. It took its name from the house called La Maison Picassiette, which is located in Chartres, France. Antoni Gaudi used this technique mainly in architectural elements, but in La Maison Picassiette the technique is used in many applications. Today, there are many famous artists working with the pique assiette technique. In this study, the development of the pique assiette is examined descriptively. Some examples are given from the works of modern artists using the technique, and the utilization of broken ceramic pieces as a sustainable material using this technique is explored.
