This paper reconsiders two aspects of the schema developed by art-theorist Miwon Kwon to analyse developments in site-related art practices since the 1960s-critical potential and mobility. Kwon's schema is made up of three models of the site, the phenomenomological, institutional-critique and discursive models. This paper proposes a reconceptualisation of the first model that alters the relationships between the models in the schema, so that, rather than demonstrating a progression between models that leaves only the last one remaining relevant today, the schema instead recognises the potential for ongoing development within each model.

Abstract

This paper reconsiders two aspects of the schema developed by art-theorist Miwon Kwon to analyse developments in site-related art practices since the 1960s-critical potential and mobility. Kwon's schema is made up of three models of the site, the phenomenomological, institutional-critique and discursive models. This paper proposes a reconceptualisation of the first model that alters the relationships between the models in the schema, so that, rather than demonstrating a progression between models that leaves only the last one remaining relevant today, the schema instead recognises the potential for ongoing development within each model.
