Abstract
Within the Australian government policy of self determination there is promotion for Indigenous business and employment initiatives as pathways for overcoming the socioeconomic disadvantages of Australian Aboriginals. This paper outlines the radical changes of Federal Aboriginal affairs policy and how these alternatives have led to barriers to and the opportunities for vocational, economic and social development of Indigenous people. In this paper is presented an example of a relatively large entrepreneurial Indigenous business operation that is being undertaken with Yolngu people in the remote community of Yirrka|a within the East Arnhem Land region of the Northern Territory of Australia. The strengths of the business are identified together with projections of the essential initiatives that will be required to promote sustained Indigenous employment opportunities.
