Psychological Capital as a Predictor of Workplace Behavior: An Empirical Investigation

In the era of economic slowdown, human resource and its perfect utilization can act as a source of sustainability and growth for an organization, thereby making it vital for an organization to focus on building people's strengths which is the blood and soul of recently emerged field of Positive Organizational Behavior (POB). Psychological Capital (PsyCap), an offshoot of POB has emerged out of the growing importance of human centric approaches in an organization. PsyCap represents how hopeful, resilient, confident and optimistic an employee is. Appreciating the growing importance of PsyCap in understanding human Behavior, this research aims at investigating the relationship among Psychological Capital, Organizational citizenship Behavior and Counterproductive workplace Behavior. An empirical research was conducted on 107 employees of 11 Information technology firms located in Chandigarh tricity region. Results revealed that PsyCap has significant positive relationship with Organizational citizenship Behavior directed towards individuals (OCBI), Organizational Citizenship Behavior directed towards Organization (OCBO) and significant negative relationship with Counterproductive workplace Behavior (CWB). The results suggested that organizations should invest in developing and managing the psychological capital of organizational leaders and human resources which can act as a protective shield in meeting the growing challenges, adversities for today and certainly in the future. The study suggests that HR managers should design the short interventions to enhance the components of self efficacy, Hope, Optimism and Resilience. The study concludes by suggesting some significant strategies to boost the same.
