Objectives: The main purpose of this work is to provide comprehensive study of Internet of things (IoT) applications, enabling environment, various challenges and opportunities with respect to India and provide insight into current state of internet of things in India. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Different perspective of Internet of Things are taken into consideration for discussion like applications, key enablers and challenges in general and with respect to India. Also, possible solution or direction of solution is discussed with each of the challenges posed. Findings: While the private sector is booming with preparations in full swing for embracing the coming age of Internet of Things, India is not far behind. India has realized this and technology is prioritized. Digital India campaign and the IoT Draft Policy point towards what steps are being taken and what ideology is being followed. But this ideology and a start shall not be able to fulfill the prophecy alone. Being a developing country, India needs to look at other areas such as policies, cost, security, research and various areas of IoT such as consumer, healthcare, smart-cities, and agriculture. India should focus on using IoT to solve its mass problems and pursue to build a model for developing countries. Areas such as authentication and privacy are matters that require urgent attention both technically and in terms of laws and policies since without that, IoT implementation has no base. Applications/Improvements: This study helps to identify factors affecting the problem areas specific to the Indian scenario and the domains that present an urgent need for solutions which will help the proliferation of IoT in everyday lives.
