Chemical control experiments were conducted against the coneworm, Dioryctria abietella by following the soil application of thimet 109 and furadan 3g, and tree injections of phosphomidon 85 sl and monocrotophos 36 ec at different dosages of treatments including control in seed production area of Deodar in Kansar Range of Chakrata Forest Division, Uttaranchal. The post treatment observations revealed a significant decline in the incidence of infestation in the case of drip line application in soil of thimet 109 @ 100 grams per 20 cm girth and tree injection of monocrotophos 36 ec @ 100 ml per 20-cm girth.

Habitats of Elephant (Elephas maximus) need to be protected for survival and sustenance of elephants, a symbol of our natural and cultural heritage. Degradation and fragmentation of habitats of elephants are also result in growing man-animal conflicts. The mighty animal is subjected to unnatural miseries creating problems to animals and abandoned calves. The opportunity however can be a tool of management through rearing and training of such elephants for conservation and management activities. Control of cone worm Dioryctria abietella Denis and Schiff. Infesting cone and seed of spruce (Picea smithiana) in seed production areas was attempted. The systemic insecticides viz thimet, carbofuran, dimethoate, monocrotophos were applied at the point of drip line application in soil and through tree injection at the base of the trees in Seed Production Area (SPA) at Deoban, Kanasar Range, Chakrata Forest Division (Uttaranchal). Tree injection with monocrotophos 36 EC 100 ml with 20 cm Girth of a tree at Breast Height was found superior than the application of granular pesticides in the soil at the drip line. Tree injection could protect 86.49 per cent, cones from the attack of cone worm.- Genetic Improvement of Teak

Genetic improvement of Teak has been undertaken under Maharashtra Van Sanshodhan Sanstha, Chandrapur in a systematic manner conducting identification of seed production areas, selection of plus trees, establishment of clonal Teak Seed Orchards and Teak Seedling Seed Orchards, establishment of Teak Germ Plasm Bank, as well as Bud Multiplication Gardens, Progeny testing and provenance trial. Thus efforts are being taken to produce genetically superior Teak trees by making use of principles of plant breeding. The works going on in MVSS, Chandrapur will go a long way in the field of Genetic Improvement of Teak.- Mounted Nursery Beds and Self-pruning

Joint Forest Management (JFM) approach has been adopted by the Odisha Forestry Sector Development Project (OFSDP) to achieve twin objectives of restoration of degraded forests as well as improvement of livelihood of the forest dependent population through formation of the Vana Samrakshyana Samitis (VSS) facilitating community participation. The use of Remote Sensing, Differential GPS and GIS techniques helps in identification of degraded forests, generation of thematic data sets, data analysis and presentation of map based forestry information in scientific and contemporary methods. The process facilitates geo-referencing of the data sets to provide accurate map feature reference to the earth coordinates with sub-meter level of accuracy. The geo-database along with the GIS based map information system were utilized by the JFM project for preparation of the micro plan and also tracking/monitoring of the implementation of forestry development programmes and can be a evolved into a MRV system under REDD+. The system also facilitates periodic impact analysis through temporal analysis of the satellite images.Keywords

Present study deals with the treatment of seeds with growth regulators and chemicals to enhance germinability of seeds of chilgoza pine (Pinus girardiana) which is an endemic but highly endangered species of North-Western Himalaya. The study revealed that significantly higher germination (73.23%), germination capacity (78.45%), germination energy (43.09%) and germination value (3.11) in chilgoza pine seed coincided with 4th collection date i.e. 4th October. At this stage the decreased cone specific gravity (0.87) and moisture content (43.09%) was found to have a promotry affect on germination behaviour of the seed. Application of 100ppm GA3 proved to be the most effective pre-sowing treatment, resulting in highest success in chilgoza pine seed. Similarly, twenty four hour soaking proved to be more effectiveas compared to twelve hours soaking for improving germination parameters in chilgoza seed.Keywords
