Abstract

Thirty-two Bambusa tulda plus clumps were selected using the selection index method and assembled at the germplasm bank of Rain Forest Research Institute, Jorhat. The plus clumps were from different geographical regions of Assam and Meghalaya. Growth study of selected plus clumps in the germplasm bank revealed significant differences among genotypes (at P<0.05 level) for all the parameters height, dbh, and age. The Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) grouped the plus clumps into 15 groups on the basis of height and the plus clump RFRI/BT/511 from Madhavpur of Jorhat district was found to be the best performer (l3.35m), while the plus clump RFRI/BT/502 from Sonapur of Kamrup district was found to be the least best performer. Further, the Duncan Multiple Range Test grouped the plus clumps into 12 groups on the basis of the dbh, with the plus clump RFRI/BT/509 from Balijan, Titabor of Jorhat district (95.32 mm) as the top performer and the plus clump RFRI/BT/502 from Sonapur of Kamrup district as the least best performer. Correlation study showed positive correlation between height and dbh and height was negatively correlated with that of age. A multiple regression model for prediction of height using dbh and age was established.

Abstract

A study was undertaken in Dendrocalamus hamiltonii to assess variability and structure in seven commercially important morphological parameters in 120 sampled clumps across six populations in east Khasi Hills. Statistically significant variations were found in six parameters viz., culm length, culm diameter at breast height (dbh), culm internode length, number of nodes, culm wall thickness and culm lumen diameter. A high negative and significant (p = 0.01) correlation between culm internode length and culm wall thickness was observed. Principal components analysis of populations based on morphological parameters differentiated Khasi populations from the lone population in Naga Hills. This variation between the two regions could be explained by the parameters culm wall thickness and internode length. No clear population structure was detected in the Khasi Hills populations, where some degree of overlapping among populations was observed indicating continuous variation in the observed morphological parameters.

Abstract

An intensive study was conducted to quantitatively assess the composition and structure of vegetation in the dry red sanders (Pterocarpus santalinus L. f.) bearing forest areas of Eastern Ghats, Andhra Pradesh. A total of 243 stems (&#8805;10 cm dbh) belonging to 40 tree species and 21 families were enumerated in 45 quadrats of 100 m<SUP>2</SUP> each, spread over five study sites. Tree communities at the five sites differed in composition, density, dominance and structure. The number of species (species richness) across study sites ranged from 5 to 20. The tree density across study sites ranged from 622.2 stems ha<SUP>-1</SUP> to388.9 stems ha<SUP>-1</SUP> . The basal area across study sites ranged from 15.884 m<SUP>2</SUP> ha<SUP>-1</SUP> to 7.351 m<SUP>2</SUP> ha<SUP>-1</SUP> . The Shannon-Weiner Index (H') of species diversity varied from 2.765 to 1.414. Syzygium alternifolium, Anogeissus latifolia and Chloroxylon swietenia were found to be the predominant species at the study sites. The relative position of red sanders in the community was found to be fifth and beyond.Red sanders was conspicuously absent from the higher diameter classes. The probable cause for this absence and its implications are discussed.
