Research Support in Amelioration of Social Forestry Programme in Kachchh

Social Forestry means the practice of forestry for the society by the society, through the society to provide goods and services at the door steps of the people. The Involvement of social scientists in this movement would be helpful to understand the attitudes, aspiration and the needs of the rural poor. Regarding the Kachchh, being its population very thin, It doea not pose a serious problem for the requirements of fuel, fodder, fruit and small timer. Nonetheless, frequency of droughts, very harsh and typical climatic and edaphlc conditions, poorly developed agriculture etc. Contribute to aggravate the problems. An attempt has been made to focus attention about various problems and potentialities with special reference to Kachchh District. To Implement Social Forestry Projects effectively, there Is an urgent need of research support on different important Issues viz. water conservation, salinity, nursery operations, plantations techniques with modifications in C.F.P. components, spacement, choice of species, maintenance and improvement of plantation by puttlrtg more inputs along with protection measures, rotation, harveatlng and marketing of Forest produces, management of forest resources for Industrial development, extension forestry, farm forestry, agroforestry and silvi-pasture and plantation of refractory sites i.e. desert zone, coastal, wasteland and watershed etc. for producing higher biomass for economic and ecological amelioration.
