This paper deals with the studies undertaken in Pabar Valley Division of Himachal Pradesh and Nilambur Division of Kerala to investigate the correlation between bole diameter and crowd projection area of standing deodar (Cedrus deodara), silver fir (Abies pindrow) and teak (Tectona grandis). A positive correlation has been observed between these characters. Based on this correladon, stand density indices for deodar, silver fir, teak and sal (Shorea robusta) have been evaluated and compared with yield table figures. How this relationship can be used as an aid in thinning, determining initial spacing in tbe plantations and in interpretation of aerial pbotographs has been discussed.
