Abstract

Background: The Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) is considered to be effective for variable speed applications with high power density. A controller is designed for reduction of torque ripples and for speed control. Methods: This paper presents a PSO based fuzzy controller for the switched reluctance motors (SRM). Results: The dynamic response of the SRM with the proposed controller is studied and the effectiveness of the proposed controller is compared with that of the fuzzy PI controller. Applications: Hybrid electric vehicles, aircraft starter/generator systems, washing machines, automotive applications etc.

Abstract

Pulsed power supply system plays an important role in rail gun system as it gives an electrical energy to rail gun in order to accelerate the projectile with higher velocity. Nowadays the pulsed power supply system which feed the rail launcher is still large and it is important to think about the minimization of the stored energy. The pulsed power supply system that has well enough small mass and volume, yet can offer properly conditioned power, is a vital component for the successful accomplishment of rail gun system. All embracing works and researches are being carried out all over the world for the minimization of the volume occupied by the power supply and its weight. Capacitor based pulsed power supply systems are the most familiar form of pulsed power supplies system used in rail gun research for the past several years. The design of a 500kJ capacitor module pulsed power system, which can able to accelerate the projectile with a velocity of 1km/s to 1.5km/s, to be applied for the electromagnetic rail gun currently under investigation in India for surface fire support. In this paper an attempt is made to design a 500kJ PPS using computer simulation packages called PSPICE software in order to calculate the rail gun parameters such as acceleration of the projectile, muzzle velocity, peak current, current at exit, effective barrel length. Finally, this work gives some fundamental contemplation on volume and weight requirements of 500kJ capacitive PPS systems to be applied for speedy fire of electromagnetic rail guns.

Abstract

Detection of Optic Disc (OD) is an essential step in the automatic analysis of digital colour fundus mages, while developing automated screening systems for diabetic retinopathy. The main objective of this research is to automatically detect the position of the OD. The method starts by normalizing luminosity and contrast throughout the image using illumination equalization and adaptive histogram equalization methods respectively. The OD detection algorithm is based on matching the expected directional pattern of the retinal blood vessels. Hence, a simple matched filter is proposed to roughly match the direction of the vessels at the OD vicinity. The retinal vessels are segmented using a simple and standard 2-D Gaussian matched filter. Consequently, a vessels direction map of the segmented retinal vessels is obtained using the same segmentation algorithm. The segmented vessels are then thinned and filtered using local intensity, to represent finally the OD center candidates. The difference between the proposed matched filter resized into four different sizes and the vessels directions at the surrounding area of each of the OD- center candidates is measured. The minimum difference provides an estimate of the OD center coordinates. The proposed method was implemented in MATLAB.
