Ochreinauclea missionis (Wall ex G. Don) Ridsd. is an extremely rare and threatened medicinally important tree, endemic to Western Ghats. Vegetative propagation of the plant was tried using stem cuttings treated with auxins (IAA, IBA and NAA) during summer, monsoon months and air layering in order to develop promising propagation methods to aid for its conservation. Soft cuttings treated with IBA at a concentration of 1000 ppm during monsoon and air layering during August-October were found to be ideal methods of vegetative propagation of the species.- Vivipary in Gluta travancorica: Its Phytogeographic and Evolutionary Significance

The occurrence of vivipary in Gluta. travancorica has been treated as a genetic linked adaptive strategy through an evolutionary process to sustain the minimum viable individuals in its habitats. The vicariance of Gluta spp. viz., Southern Western Ghats, Madagascar and New Guinea from the main stock of the Malayan peninsula implies the phytogeographic history of the peninsular India on the basis of continental drift and biotic ferry model of transoceanic movement in plants. Malayan peninsula accommodates about 10 species of the Gluta, which usually inhabit peat swamps or marshy places. The ever-ending physical vagaries experiences in the presently degraded shola/montane ecosystems of the southern Western Ghats has compelled the species to produce viviparous seed germination as an adaptation to make sure its progenies. Further, the vivipary in G. travancorica recalls its possible original habitats in the peat swamps since its allied species are growing as mangrove associates in the Malayan peninsula.Keywords

Two new populations of Humboldtia bourdillonii Prain, an endemic tree of southern Western Ghats, Kerala, were recorded from Kulamavu forest, Idukki district,Kerala. The earlier populations reported are from Arjunankotta-Poonkavanam forests in Periyar Tiger Reserve of Peermede plateau. The population structure including number of mature individuals, gbh, age class along with major associates and seedling bank of the populations were analyzed as part of population ecology and subsequent in situ conservation of the species.Keywords

The rarity of Atuna indica, an endemic and endangered tropical tree species of the Western Ghats, India has been analysed in this study. The phenology, floral biology, including pollen–ovule ratio, pollinators, fruit development and biotic interactions in natural dynamics were studied. Extreme reduction in the number of flowering individuals, microhabitat conditions, low fruit set, seed infestation and fruit predation were identified as the factors leading to rarity of the species in situ.Keywords

Inadequate know-how on seed and nursery technology of wild edible fruits is a bottleneck for their commercialization. The seeds of Baccaurea courtallensis lose their viability within six days under ambient conditions and are found to be sensitive to desiccation and low-temperature conditions revealing their recalcitrant nature. The longevity of the seeds could extend up to six months during storage in polycarbonate bottles maintained at 20°C and 40% relative humidity. Coarse river sand was optimized as the ideal sowing medium for seed germination. The application of 3000 ppm naphthalene acetic acid was standardized for clonal propagation for selective breeding of female genetic stock.Keywords
