Ninety six clones of Dalbergia sissoo were hedged at 30 cm of height level in the month of Jan. - Feb. in VMG at Birplasi, Nalagarh (HP) to assess shoot regeneration capacity of different clones. Significant differences (P> 0.001) were observed among clones regarding days to shoot emergence, collar diameter of cut stumps, shoot number, shoot length and basal diameter of shoots. The earliest shoot emergence (5 days) was recorded in clone 86 and 91 both belonging to Rajasthan. The maximum number of shoots (67) were recorded in clone 107 (Rajasthan) followed by 57 shoots (Clone 42, Gonda), while maximum shoot length (133cm) and diameter (11 mm) was observed in clone 9 (Pathri, Haridwar). A feeble (r=0.68) correlation was observed between collar diameter of stump and number of regenerated shoots.- Effect of Coppicing Height on Shoot Production Capacity of Different Clones of Dalbergia sissoo Roxb.

Different clones of Dalbergia sissoo were coppiced at two coppicing levels viz. 15 cm and 30 cm to identify the best clone producing maximum number of shoots and the best height at which coppicing should be made. Statistically significant differences were observed among different clones with the maximum number of shoots being produced in Clone 189 at 30 cm height while the minimum number of shoots were produced in Clone 86 at the same height. Net photosynthesis was monitored in coppiced shoot leafy nodal cuttings of Eucalyptus hybrid at different periods during adventitious ischolar_main formation. The cuttings were treated with IBA 2000, 4000 ppm or with talcum powder (Control) and kept under intermittent mist. Significant differences in current photosynthesis of treated and untreated control cuttings were observed throughout the ischolar_maining period. IBA treated cuttings responded better in terms of photosynthetic efficiency as compared to untreated control cuttings. We concluded that current photosynthesis in Eucalyptus hybrid cuttings definitely has some role in ischolar_maining that is masked by auxin application.- Seed Source Variation in Chlorophyll Contents of Leaves of Acacia nilotica (Linn.) The chlorophyll content of leaf as influenced by four water stress levels on seedlings belonging to 9 seed sources of 30 progenies of Acacia nilotica was studied in controlled conditions. Considerable differences were observed among seed sources with respect to chlorophylls a and 6, and total chlorophyll (a + b) content (nig g-1 fresh weight). Chlorophyll content decreased with increasing water stress in all the sources, however, the decrease was higher in seedlings of the humid sources as compared to dry sources. Overall high amount of chlorophyll content (chlorophyll a, b and total) was observed in seed sources collected from drier region of the country, whereas, low chlorophyll content was observed from humid sources. The chlorophyll contents were negatively correlated with rainfall.Keywords

Investigations were undertaken to study the effect of IBA and several phenolic compounds on the ischolar_maining and growth of cladode segments of Casuarina equisetifolia. 1,000,5,000 and 10,000 ppm concentrations of IBA as well as the 100 ppm concentration of most of the phenolic compounds tried promoted ischolar_maining and the growth of cladode segments. However, the promotion of ischolar_maining and the growth of the segments even with ]000 ppm IBA were greater when the phenolic compound was applied as a pretreatment immediately before the auxin treatment. The phenolic compounds were found to reduce IBA requirement by 80% - 90%. Besides the ischolar_maining and the growth of the segments treated with only 1000 ppm IBA after pretreatment with phenolic compounds were found equally good or even superior to the segments which were treated with 5,000 or 10,000 ppm IBA alone. This paper describes a new technique of macro propagation for the rapid mass multiplication of clonal material of cladode bearing species viz; Casuarina equiselifolia. Casllorina glauco and Tamarix aphylla by ischolar_maining cladode segments. Accordingio this method. The needle-like cladodes are collected and made into 4.0 cm long Aegments, treated with IBA and planted under intermittent mist. Rooting and survivability of the segments was found to he quite satisfactory. Rooting trial were conducted terminal and sub-terminal leafy softwood binodal segments made from actively growing branches of neem. The terminal segments ischolar_mained easily even without auxin treatment. The segments taken from the sub-terminal greenwood zone were only moderately easy to ischolar_main but their ischolar_maining response improved on their treatment with potassium permanganate and ascorbic acid. A new technique of macropropagation by ischolar_maining small segments of cladodes for rapid mass multiplication of clonal material of Casuarina equisetifolia L. is described. Even as small as 2.0 cm long cladode segments can be rotted if maintained under high humidity. The size of cladode segments, position of the cladode on the shoot, auxin treatment, season of taking and planting the segment and age and genotype of the mother plant were found to affect the ischolar_maining ability of the cladode segments. Genetic parameters for nine pod and seed traits. and per cent germination were worked out in thirty seed sources of Acacia nilotica mostly from the state of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Values for variability expected genetic gain were calculated for aU individual characters. Seed length, seed width and 100 seed weight exhibited high genetic variabiJity, heritability and genetic gain. Correlation study revealed that pod thickness; pod weight, seed length, seed width, seed thickness and 100 seed weight had significant and positive association with germination percentage. These traits therefore should be given priority for improving germination in Acacia nilotica.Keywords
