- Evaluation of Antidepressant, Motor Coordination and Locomotor Activities of Ethanolic Root Extract of Clitoria Ternatea

Clitoria ternatea (CT), a perennial herbaceous plant commonly known as 'butterfly pea', has been used for centuries as a traditional Ayurvedic medicine. The aim of present study was to investigate the anti depressant (by Tail suspension test and Forced swimming test), motor coordinati on (by Rota-rod method) and locomotor (with an actophotometer) activities of ethanolic ischolar_main extract of Clitoria ternatea Linn. In experimental animals. The study revealed that the extracts (150 and 300 mg/kg, p.o.) were able to reduce the immobility time of rats in a dose-dependent manner when subjected to both Tail suspension and Forced swim tests, and the results were similar to that of standard drug imipramine (15 mg/kg, p.o.). Clitoria ternatea ethanolic ischolar_main extract (300 mg/kg) showed mild reduction in locomotor and motor coordination activity. The results indicated that ethanolic ischolar_main extract of Clitoria ternatea has significant anti depressant activity (150 mg/kg (p<0.01) and 300 mg/kg (p<0.001)) when compared with standard imipramine (p<0.001) with a mild sedative effect (300 mg/kg only). The results of the sedative effect are not statistically significant, and the sedative effect may be due to higher dose. Therefore, Clitoria ternatea may be served as a potential resource for natural psychotherapeutic agent against depression and mood disorders.Keywords

The present study investigates the antidiarrhoeal and antiulcer activities of hydroalcoholic fruit extract of Luffa aegyptiaca. The fruits were shade dried and made into a coarse powder which was then subjected to continuous hot extraction in Soxhlet apparatus with hydroalcoholic solvent (ethanol 50% + water 50%) and the residual marc was collected. The extract was used to screen for their antidiarrhoeal and antiulcer activities. The antidiarrhoeal activity was evaluated at two different concentrations viz., 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg of the above extract using Castor oil induced diarrhea method in experimental rats. Extract with 500 mg/kg concentration showed significant reduction of induced diarrhoea as compared to the control group animals. But, the antidiarrhoeal activity was found to be less than that of standard drug, Diphenoxylate (5 mg/kg). Anti-ulcer activity was carried out by pylorus ligation method induced gastric ulcer. Ulcer protective action was observed at a dose of 500 mg/kg of Hydroalcoholic fruit extract of Luffa aegyptiaca, which was found to be closer to the standard drug, Famotidine (10 mg/kg).Keywords

Herbal medicine has been used for many years by different cultures around the world for the treatment of diabetes and hence the alcoholic bark extract of Mimosa catechu (AEMC) Wild plant was investigated for its possible antihyperglycemic effect in alloxan induced diabetic rats. The animals were made diabetic by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan monohydrate at a dose of 150mg/kg body weight. The alcoholic extract of Mimosa catechu, AEMC (250 and 500mg kg-1) and the standard drug (Glibenclamide 0.5mg/kg) were administered orally. Control group of rats were administered 0.2ml of 10% acacia mucilage (vehicle). The effect of oral administration of AEMC for 7days on the levels of Serum glucose, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol in normal and diabetic rats were evaluated and compared with that of standard antidiabetic drug, Glibenclamide. Oral administration of 250 and 500mg kg-1 body wt of AEMC for 7 days exhibited a significant reduction in serum glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDLcholesterol and increase in HDL-cholesterol, Plasma insulin in alloxan induced diabetic rats. The antidiabetic effect of AEMC was similar to Glibenclamide. Hence our study reveals the antidiabetic and Hypolipidemic potential of Mimosa catechu bark and the study could be helpful to develop medicinal preparations for diabetes and related symptoms.Keywords
