At least since the recent world wide financial crisis questions were raised if the rush for economic growth measured by the GDP is an appropriate tool. Fundamental issues like the quality of life and working life, social inequality, health, life expectancy, sustainability are neglected since then. In the 1960s these questions were raised e.g. Brundtland Commission "Our Common Future" leading to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. The Agenda 21 in 1987 was an important milestone in reconsidering the dominant economic policies and assessments. However, already in the 19th century the whole debate about the alternatives to the developing modern capitalism were discussed and practiced - the socialist, communist, anarchist, cooperative movement. "Another World is possible!" is the slogan of the World Social Forum since 2001, and may give the perspective for a world "Beyond GDP".References

There are fundamental questions to ask before we are able to come to grips in regard to the future of the European Social Model and the role of Europe in a globalising world. Today we are facing a number of challenges. In September 2009 the biggest financial and economic crash since the Black Friday 1929 has shuttered the economic model of deregulation at any price and the attempt to destroy the welfare state. Apparently we are at a new beginning, although those who are mainly responsible for this disaster try to blame the state. Since many years there were already a number of warnings that this neo-liberal economic system, which declared war on the trade unions and workers participation, is not sustainable neither economically or financially nor socially or environmentally, argues the paper.References

China is transforming in the last thirty years in an unknown speed, however, the social tissue and labour relations suffer a lot. Affected are not only some 250 million migrant workers but most others as well. The Chinese trade unions are not autonomous, no right to strike and very weak in defending workers' rights. There are some 130,000 revolts every year for lost income, non-respect of workers' rights, going as far as killing managers and entrepreneurs on the one hand, and oppression and killings of workers on the other. Some enlightened scientists and union leaders call for action to create real trade unions with full rights. The Guangzhou Trade Union Confederation helped in 2007 establish the first trade union of migrant workers for construction workers. And the same Confederation organised the first International Scientific Symposium on "Labour Relations & Labour Rights under Global Recession" in November 2009.References
