Abstract

Appraising asset utilization is a multi-task exercise conceived and performed because it measures how efficiently an organization uses its resources. The success of any enterprise is tied to its ability to manage and leverage its assets. Assets utilization ratios (turnover ratios) provide measures of management effectiveness. Hence, in this study a detailed analysis of assets turnover has been made for better understanding the factors responsible for changes in profitability in the Indian Automobile industry. The analysis of all the assets utilization ratios registered a fluctuating trend during the study period, which may be due to the difference into growth rate of sales because of the factors such as market conditions, pricing policy, government policy and competition. Comparatively, the companies under two and three wheelers sector out performed the commercial vehicles and passenger cars and multi-utility vehicles sector with respect to their asset utilization.

Abstract

Davana (Artemisia pallens) is an important high valued annual medicinal and aromatic herb of India belonging to the family Asteraceae. India has a monopoly in production and export trade of davana oil and India stands 3^rd in essential oil production in the world. This study was conducted at the Department of Seed Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore to upgrade the seed quality of davana seeds. The seeds were subjected to the following seed quality assessment. The observation made on seed recovery (%), 1000 seed weight (mg), germination per cent, seedling length (cm), dry matter production and vigour index. The results revealed that davana seeds upgraded with petroleum ether was found to improve the seed quality parameters viz., 1000 seed weight (120 mg), germination (71 %) and vigour index (170.0).

Abstract

The present work is an attempt to analyze the profitability and its determinants in banking sector in India. Profitability in the bank is a function of several variables that may be called as different determination of profitability. Now the question arises what are the factors that contribute to the improvement in profitability and mainly what are the factors responsible for deterioration in profitability of banks. Therefore, an attempt has been made in this study to estimate the impact of selected factors on bank profitability. Therefore, State Bank of India was chosen to critically examine the determinants of profitability of the banks for the present study. An empirical estimation of profit shows that credit deposit ratio, NPA as percentage to net advances, provisions and contingencies, operating expenses and business per employee are the significant determinants of profitability of SBI during the study period. To conclude, banking industry in the new millennium is never going to be like what it was in the last century. Banks in India have marched ahead during the post-banking sector reforms period in fostering economic growth of the country and have shown tremendous resilience and vibrancy in their strategies, processes and operating to remain competitive in the globalized environment.

Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine empirically whether transactions of working capital balances including cash and inventories vary proportionately or less than proportionately to changes in the volume of sales. The study also describes the effect of capital costs on working capital holdings of the selected companies in the Indian automobile industry. The results of the study showed that Indian automobile industry and its three sectors need to hold working capital balances depends not only on sales but on holding costs also.

Abstract

The primary aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between Cash Conversion Cycle (Liquidity) and firms' profitability. The analysis based on a sample of 20 Indian Automobile firms for the period 1996-2009. The results suggest that the managers can increase profitability of their firms by shortening the cash conversion cycle, accounts receivables period and inventory conversion period. The results suggest that managers can also increase the profitability of their firms by lengthening the accounts payables period. The study suggest an optimal cash conversion cycle as more accurate and comprehensive measures of liquidity analysis.

Abstract

It can be inferred from the study that operating efficiency of selected oil refineries in India was satisfactory and the management generally succeeded in investing capital funds. The performance of Reliance Industries Ltd and Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd was good during the study period. Mangalore Refinery Petrochemicals Ltd and Essar Oil Ltd have not performed well during the period of study. Further, owner's funds were utilized profitably by all the selected oil refineries in India except Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd and Essar Oil Ltd. It is significant to note that the position regarding earnings per share and dividend payout ratio in all the selected oil refineries during the period under review shows better performance and prospects from the point of view of shareholders. The results showed that Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals, Essar Oil Ltd and Reliance Industries Ltd experienced a strong tendency in profitability to decline over the study period. The falling tendency of profit rate of these companies is the proof of adverse effect of various controls on process, output, expansion, investment and distribution imposed by government on these companies over time. Only in the case of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd, Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd and Reliance Industries Ltd, the time trend co-efficient is positive implying the tendency of profit rate to rise over time. The study concluded that the analysis of profitability of the selected oil refineries reveals that majority of the companies under review highlighted better performance and prospects from the point of view of owners.

Abstract

The goal of the series of studies is to examine through a survey the need a theoretical foundation and potentialities of Knowmatics and knowledge technology. The objectives of the present study are: I) to examine the effectiveness of Information Technology (IT) in knowledge processing; and 2) to examine the need and possibility of developing a new technology for knowledge processing. Based on the findings of the survey suggests the following: to give training and provide experience in advanced web technologies like data mining/XML/Semantic web, etC-i to establish a new data mining/knowledge management technology considered as helpfUl in processing information into knowledge; conduct awareness programntes about the need to develop new algorithms or software for knowledge processing different from those used for data processing; and to include the subjects "Structure and development of knowledge", "Information economy" and "Information society" in the educational courses for information professionals.
