On the glistening holiday flyers, Goa is every tourist's yearning of a peaceful sun-drenched heaven. Ever since the Hippies discovered this erstwhile Portuguese colony in the sixties, tourists have been flocking this land of good times. Over the decades, Goa which once boasted of virgin white beaches, inconspicuous locals, and the green finery, has evolved a hideous side which detonates violently, raising questions and demanding solutions. Glance through any of the local dailies- crime, perversion, and in general degradation of social, cultural structure seems to have become more of a norm rather than an exception. Can this be the outfall of unplanned, harried, unbridled growth of the tourism industry in the state? This paper looks into the progression of the dark side of tourism in the state of Goa. A survey of 300 domestic as well as 300 international tourists was undertaken to understand their sense of safety and security in visiting this State. The paper concludes that 'Village Tourism" could be a plausible solution to the unabated crimes related to tourism in the state. Keywords

This Paper is a product of UGC Minor Research Project (2009-10) - Exotic Village Tourism: Case Study of Saligao and Candolim. The purpose of this paper is to get an insight into Goa's tourism industry, with special reference to its villages. The focus is to contemplate whether there is scope to inject 'Village Tourism' in Goa. Besides personal observations by the virtue of being a local resident, a survey of both domestic as well as international tourists clubbed with case study of tourist centric village of Candolim and a relatively non tourist centric village of Saligao was taken up for study. The main findings of the research shows that Goa, is best known for its beaches, churches and a fun and frolic way of life, but, there are visitors and tourist who are looking out for novelty and ethnicity that exits in the serene and unexplored villages of Goa. Village tourism can open new doors and instill a new lease of life to the Tourism industry of the state provided the local community is supportive. The study provides a shifting perceptive of Goa's image. It also involves a critical diagnosis of the village centric tourism providing some valuables insights. It highlights the need for the industry to shift from beach centric approach to village/rural centric approach. Keywords

Given the fact that Goa is the state with the highest unemployment rate, the focus is to assess the possibility of introducing Village Tourism in Goa in order to bring about entrepreneurial growth associated with tourism in the otherwise ignored (non-tourist) villages of Goa. In this regard the study attempts to get an insight of the impact of tourism on the existing entrepreneurs in tourist centric and non tourist centric villages. A survey was conducted of entrepreneurs in dual settings namely tourist centric and non- tourist centric. Simple percentage values, Chi Square, Bar chart etc are applied to interpret, analyze and present data. A survey of 650 entrepreneurs was undertaken, of which 325 are operating in tourist centric villages and another 325 are operating in non tourist centric villages. Both set of entrepreneurs are open to the concept of village tourism being introduced in their villages, and the opportunities tourism offers. Keywords
