Family is the basic unit of rural Indian society, status and prestigious of the individual are significantly associated with it. The status of joint family and bigger families in Indian villages is very well studied and shown by number of social scientists. The concept of family among Lamani community has many specific ways of behavior or procedure that focuses on domestic activities. In the process of investigation I noticed that among Lamani community the family is viewed as a group of kin who all organized for the purpose of residing together and satisfying a limited number of needs necessary for their existence it becomes an association. In seven talukas of Bellary district, Lamanis claim that in one or other way they are relation by consanguinial and by affinity. Accordingly, the findings are significant hall-marks which have been noticed at the time of filed visit to understand what actually they mean by family.
