In this paper we will focus on online analytical processing (OLAP) technology - an essential component of business intelligence (BI) - exploring its features and applications in decision support. We will describe our system, with the data organized in multidimensional cubes and see how easily we can "play" with the cube by using "slice-anddice" techniques. This way, the business analysts can view and analyze the business data online, interactively and from different perspectives, which helps them to take better decisions.

Our illustrations will be provided from the system we developed in a Bank, using Microsoft Analysis Services.

Abstract

In this paper we will focus on online analytical processing (OLAP) technology - an essential component of business intelligence (BI) - exploring its features and applications in decision support. We will describe our system, with the data organized in multidimensional cubes and see how easily we can "play" with the cube by using "slice-anddice" techniques. This way, the business analysts can view and analyze the business data online, interactively and from different perspectives, which helps them to take better decisions.

Our illustrations will be provided from the system we developed in a Bank, using Microsoft Analysis Services.
