Toxicity Evaluation of Raw and Bacterial Strain Treated Slaughterhouse Wastewater on Fish Lebistes reticulatus (Peter)

Toxic effect of slaughterhouse wastewater both treated and raw on common fish (Lebistes reticulatus) under laboratory conditions was studied. LC50 values for raw and bacterial strain amended aerobically treated effluent for 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours ranged between 29%-35% and 44%-60% respectively. It was evident from the studies that, bacterial amendment in aerobic system enhances the removal in terms of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), suspended solids (SS), Fat and Protein, thereby reducing the toxicity of treated wastewater. Toxicity reduces by 23%-25% with respect to LC50 values. Regression values were very significant and ranged between 0.966 and 0.994.

This article discusses in detail the toxicity evaluation of raw and bacterial strain amended treated effluent from aerobic system of slaughterhouse wastewater treatment plant. It is seen that though the toxicity reduces after bacterial strain treatment, it needs further tertiary treatment to reduce the toxicity of treated effluent of slaughterhouse wastewater further.
