A comparison is made between the stochastic and the deterministic approaches for modelling displacement flow in porous media at the microscopic level. This comparison is based primarily on two computer models which are described in the present work. The results of the simulations undertaken are compared with results available in the literature. It appears that the deterministic approach better describes the physics of the problem while providing a useful tool for quantitative predictions of porescale phenomena which typically occur in oil displacement processes in porous media.

Abstract

A comparison is made between the stochastic and the deterministic approaches for modelling displacement flow in porous media at the microscopic level. This comparison is based primarily on two computer models which are described in the present work. The results of the simulations undertaken are compared with results available in the literature. It appears that the deterministic approach better describes the physics of the problem while providing a useful tool for quantitative predictions of porescale phenomena which typically occur in oil displacement processes in porous media.
