Sodium metasilicate acts as a dispersant for clay suspensions. The dispersing action improves the High Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS) of colouring bodies from clay. The dispersing action may be seen at low concentrations as well as relatively high concentrations of the dispersant. A possible explanation in terms of the structure of clay has been given.
