Bagjola-Ghuni-jatragachi Drainage Scheme

One of the important functions of the Engineer is to find means to overcome natural difficulties in order to improve the general sanitation. An interesting effort in this direction by engineers of the Government of West Bengal will be found described in the article on Baghjola-Ghuni-Jatragachi Drainage scheme by Sri Kanak Bhusan Banerjee. This paper was read by him before the Association of Engineers on 18.5.56 Members will remember a similar paper read by him on the 24th February, 1955 describing the closure of the Breach at Kulgachi and the interesting visit to the site. This has a bearing on the present paper and reference may be made in the Associations Journal, Vol. XXXI No.1 for a description with illustrations. The peculiar Topography of Calcutta, with its natural slope away from the Hooghly River towards low lying lands on the east inundated frequently by tidal floods entering through the only available drainage outfalls that are gradually silting up, presents difficult problems which require intense study. These two papers will be found very helpful in this respect. Reference may also be made to the following papers in the volumes of the Journal of the Association which have some bearing on the subject.
