Twenty mullets were collected monthly from the spawning tank in Mariculture and Fisheries Department during the spawning season from December to March. Total and standard lengths, body weight, sex and gonad weight were recorded. Sex ratio was 1:1.538 females to males. Males ranged in standard lengths from 150 to 180 mm and females 180 to 210 mm. Regression formulas were calculated for the relation between total and standard lengths and body weight. Gonadosomatic indices (GSI) versus months and size groups for the two sexes were plotted. Maturity stages and ova diameter were examined. Four maturity stages were recognized during the spawning period: mature, ripe, partially spent and spent. Means of GSI in ripe female, ripe male, spent female and spent male were 8.737±3.512, 5.004±2.451, 3.775±0.662 and 4.414±1.183, respectively. Natural spawning of L. carinata in captivity was possible. For the present study, it was between December and February on 24th, 25th and 26th of January 1996. Natural spawning occurred at night from 9 to 10 pm. The favorable water temperature for spawning is 19 oC. The mean fertilized egg diameter of L. carinata was 0.835±.051 mm. Hatching tooks place after 36 h at 23 oC. The mean total length of the emergent larva was 1.959±0.179 mm. All the possible stages of egg development from the fertilized egg till the just hatched larva were observed, described and some of them photographed.
