Prompt and approriate treatment of diarrhoea, particularly in infants and children, can prevent undernutrition and save life. In the early stages of the disease the most appropriate treatment is administration of oral rehydration solution, which is a simple and effective means of restoring the water and salts lost from the body in diarrhoea. Community health workers should be made aware of this method of treatment and encouraged to use it.
