They carefully observed natural phenomena, searched for the reasons and mechanisms of the occurrences, and reached certain speculative beliefs. That time it was not possible to verify them thoroughly or prove them conclusively with the help of the contemporary level of understanding of nature. As time passed, many such beliefs were found to be unjustified. For example, the Earth appears to us to be a huge static object that shelters us. Also it appears to be flat.

The Department of Chemistry of AghoreKamini PrakashChandra (AKPC) Mahavidyalaya organized a UGC-sponsored national-level 2-day seminar on ‘The Biggest Challenge Of Green Chemistry : To Use Its Rule In Practice’ in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Science, The University of Burdwan, under the convenorship of Dr Ashoke Hazra, Head of the Chemistry Department of the College, on 8 & 9 October 2015. The Chemistry department in virtual association with the entire college, under the auspices of the College Authority, vowed to make the seminar a grand success, and in due course of this discussion we shall realize that this aspiration of ours was completely fulfilled. Above all, this big accomplishment was an execution of a nice team work under the guidance of Dr Paramartha Ghosh, an energetic optimist and the Principal of the College.

Several model reaction systems have been analyzed to obtain a general rule for maximum equilibrium yield in a chemical reaction. The problem has been treated from all possible angles. The analysis reveals that the idea of using the reactants in stoichiometric ratio is just not a matter of coincidence for maximum yield in some known reactions, but a general principle for any reaction-type we can think of. Non-stoichiometric situations have naturally entered the analysis and an elaborate calculation-procedure for such systems has also been worked out. Analysis of such systems leads us to some general conclusions about the nature of equilibrium of a chemical reaction carried out under some specified conditions. Firstly I started with a known gaseous reaction, namely the formation of NH3 from N2 and H2. Then gradually I have shifted to symbolic chemical equations of different types without identifying the reactants and products with some known chemical species.Keywords

Swami Vivekananda College of Education, or SVCE, located in Goghat block of Hooghly district, West Bengal, India, at a tranquil rural agricultural belt (an area which also has the potential to develop as an agro-industrial zone), organized a One-Day National Seminar on “Importance of Teaching of Environmental Awareness as a Part of Syllabi of Teacher Education”, convened by the College Principal Dr Premananda Paul, held on 10th April 2019. About 500 participants, who included students, teachers, guests, dignitaries and resource persons, were present in the seminar. The college campus is adjacent to WB SH 2 (West Bengal State Highway 2) on the south side of the road which passes through the sub-divisional towns Arambagh in the east and Bishnupur (in Bankura district) in the west. It is situated at about 11 km west of Arambagh, 2 km east of Bengai Chowmatha, an important tetra-junction or crossing of roads on WB SH 2, and 3 km north of Goghat Railway Station. The newly established co-education college, which started admitting students in their B.Ed. and D.El.Ed. Courses since the academic session 2017-18, has created a big hope in the minds of the locals (as well as education-hungry distant people) as it fulfils their educational aspirations. The well-planned positive attitude of the management/organizers/ founders of the college is reflected in the facts that they have arranged a set of reputed teachers to teach the students (some of the students are in jobs of school teachers as well), have already set up a workable library, a furnished seminar hall (which was also the venue of the present seminar) with sitting arrangement of 400 delegates and may be extended up to 500, sufficient number of classrooms, sanitation facilities for both men and women, a reasonably big green lawn/garden whose north side faces the main road and other three sides are surrounded by the college buildings.Full Text

An analysis of isotherms reveals that Freundlich isotherm is unsuitable to describe monolayer adsorption. To rectify it, the constant k of the equation can be replaced by a pressure dependent parameter. A method has been depicted to find out pressure dependent values of k and n from experimental results.
A new insight has been introduced into the interaction mechanisms of a chain molecule at a liquid-liquid interface. The theory of rubber elasticity has been incorporated to understand the whole process of interaction.
The promising aspects of dendrimers and some other nanoparticles like nanoceria (a nanozyme) and quantum dots (including carbon dot, a quantum dot of size below 1 nanometer) have been discussed. Their emerging uses in treating ailments, sensing devices, modern electronic goods, and in boosting green technologies have been discussed briefly.
Future studies of surface science will largely depend on the uses of quantum computers. They will reduce both cost and time of experiments and at the same time will provide more accurate or otherwise incalculable data.

The book ‘Bangla Bhashay Bigyan Charcha’ (which translates into English as ‘Studies of Science in Bengali’), edited by Chitrita Bandyopadhyay and Agnita Kundu, is an well-edited compilation book whose contributors include scientists, writers of Bengali literature, teachers, researchers and students. All the writings are in Bengali. Majority of the articles are based on the main theme of the book, but some are linked with various relevant forms of the subject of interest. It actually adds to the versatility and completeness of the book in many respect. The hardcover book with an aesthetic cover-page design was published (the 1st edition) in March of 2019. Printing quality is good. The language used in these Bengali articles is quite easy. Each article provides an in-depth study relevant to its topic. All these aspects add positively to the readability of the book. However, a few printing mistakes are noticeable.Full Text

The hyperbranched spherical monodisperse polymeric macromolecules known as dendrimers, although they are the latest additions to polymers, are finding many applications in the areas of biology, biotechnology, medicine, catalysis, and in nanoreactors, and has emerged as a class of materials with one of the fastest growing areas of research and applications. Certain areas related to this finer aspects of molecular architecture, molecular dynamics under the influence of shear force and in solution, precise thermal behavior have still not been understood precisely. Silicone rubber vulcanisate was separately subjected to specified hydrotherm al treatments as well as to accelerated air ageing. The initial elastic modulus was adapted for measurment of the extent of chain degradation for the specimens treated hydrothermally. The air aged vulcanisate specimens were continuously evaluated during ageing by use of a dynamic viscoelastometer under appropriate mild strain conditions. The results were further translated into kinetic parameters for the degradation reaction. A prominent thermo oxidative crosslinking reaction was indicated to be assosiated with the air ageing process.- Fuel Cell : Efficient Energy Conversion

Oxidation reactions corresponding to combustion of fuels in air or oxygen-can be carried out electrochemically in a fuel cell. As this process bypasses the limit imposed by Camot efficiency, economic utilisation of the ensuing chemical energy is possible through adoption of this technology. The operating and maintenance cost of a fuel cell is low. Factors of inefficiencies, manifested in the form of overpotentials could largely be overcome through suitable electrode design, proper selection of catalyst, and development of low-resistance electrolyte. In the long run, the fuel cells are prospective to generate power at a cheaper rate, sort out the problems of biomass disposal and alleviate the environmental hazards.Keywords

The regions of both ideal and non-ideal behaviour of electrolyte solutions containing simple ions, ion pairs or undissociated molecules, and ion triplets have been analyzed theoretically in terms of measurable electrical properties. Methods have been devised to obtain the values of different equilibrium constants and species concentrations. Effects of temperature and solvent composition on the thermodynamic properties ΔGφ, ΔHφ and ΔSφ and evaluation techniques of these quantities have been discussed. Molar conductance of some ion-triplets has also been evaluated.Keywords

For gas phase chemical reactions of the types a1A1 + a2A2 +......+ arAr → b1B1, the conditions for maximum yield at equilibrium fit into a general mathematical inequality which in compact notation takes the form rπi=1(xi)ai ≤ 1 if rƩi=1Fixi = 1 and Fi = ai/rƩj=1aj for positive values of ai and xi. The equality sign holds if xi= 1 for all i, and the inequality refers to all other situations. Moreover, x1 = x2 = …. = xr = 1 are the coordinates of the common point of the hyperplanes ƩFixi = 1, which corresponds to the point of equilibrium of stoichiometric mixturechiometric mixture.Keywords
