The thyroid gland is located anteriorly in the infrahyoid compartment of the neck, outlined by muscles, larynx, trachea, oesophagus, carotid arteries and jugular veins. It consists of two lobes located on either side of the trachea and connected by a narrow isthmus. A pyramidal lobe is often present and it projects upwards from the isthmus, usually to the left of the midline. It is the most richly vascularised organ of all the superficially located structures of the body.
