Do we Need Breast Pumps in India?

Use of breastpump for milk expression was the norm especially in mothers of babies in the neonatal intensive care unit, however the use has become common even in the normal healthy baby. Breast pumps are easily available over the counter and the design has evolved over the years to meet the varying needs of the mother. Various types of breastpumps are available in the market. Recent research has advocated the need for individualizing the breastpump according the needs of the mother.

This paper aims to systematically review the literature related to the history of breast pump, the types of breast pumps and categorization of breastpump according to the need. Databases (Medline, PubMed and the Cochrane library) were searched using the keywords breast pump, breast milk expression and breast milk pumping, limited to the last 20 years of publication.

As the reasons for expressing have broadened and so also the equipment available for milk expression. This review is intended as an evidence- based approach to aid clinicians and lactation professionals individualize the breast pump to the mother- infant dyads' characteristics.
