New Media Arts and Human-Computer Interaction: Forming Aesthetic Interaction

The paradigm of aesthetics in new media arts emphasizes user participation, operation and action. People's daily online interactions, such as shopping, checking emails and searching for information on the Web can be identified as information behaviors. Today, artists need to develop interfaces and audience interaction with information structures and contents. According to Manovich (2001), post-media aesthetics needs categories that can depict how a cultural object organizes data and how it structures the audience's experience of the data. Within the above context, the ways to design users' experiences of interacting with information structures is one of the key issues in new media art. This research will apply human movement theories and the notion of usability in human-computer interaction. It will also consider Dewey's (1987) idea of aesthetics being "art as experience" as it applies to interactive design. The research will describe how, in interactive design, the movement paradigm can be aligned with user experience to enable a mutual and open process of affecting and being affected. Based on these theoretical understandings, a framework of interactive design will be proposed to contribute to new media arts. This paper is intended to introduce new media artists to a new framework for interactive design which is suited to the expression of art.
