Abstract

Technological advancements in information industry have transformed the entire scenario of libraries and librarianship including the trends in research. Since librarianship is problem oriented and tends to focus on issues in real world and the scope of LIS research is primarily addressing the practical issues related to libraries. In view of the recent application of usage metrics in several LIS studies to find information about use, usage of e-resources and users as well as using environments etc. besides the most popular conventional methods, the emergence of usage metrics and initiatives to standardize their format was cited. Their exclusive characteristics tenable for use studies, user studies, analytical studies and bibliometric/ scientometric studies and also ranking studies were discussed highlighting their relevance in realistic perspective. At the end, limitations of usage metrics were also mentioned suggesting the other methods to follow for an over view of the problem or situation.

Abstract

The act of taking some ones else's creative work and projecting as their own is considered as fraud and unethical. Such unethical practices are more distressing as in the academic and research highest values are attributed to original research, and it contributes to the multi-focal development of mankind. The issue is more precipitating due to the proliferation and easy accessibility of scholarly resources in digital format. In this premise, the paper outlines the concept of plagiarism explaining the contributing factors for the occurrences of this academic misconduct. Several types of plagiarism were described highlighting the policies and practices framed as preventive measures by the governmental, nongovernmental organizations, academic institutions and publishers. Additionally, the need for running plagiarism screening using appropriate software was emphasized for academic environment, to be able to estimate the quantum of similarity in research documents and to justify the commonalities as well as self published papers etc. in the light of course work requirements in academic institutions.

Abstract

Plagiarism is an ethical issue and has been universally disapproved, especially in the academic/ research/art and literary circles. The anti-plagiarism drive in the universities after the implementation of UGC regulations brought about changes in the academic community. This study examines users’ perceptions regarding plagiarism, plagiarism detection tools, similarity verification process and seeks to obtain their feedback on implementing the new practice in the University of Hyderabad and the role of the library in executing the program. This was done through an online questionnaire posted to all the students/research scholars who had got their work screened by the Library for plagiarism. The survey results indicate that around 80% of respondents were aware of the concept, functionality features of plagiarism detection tools, but mentioned their constraints in handling repeated terms, own publications etc. Further 80-90% agreed with implementing plagiarism detection process through tools and were satisfied with the information and screening services provided by the Library. Based on users expectations and results, it is suggested that institutions be proactive in promoting ethical values/ code among] students and in inculcating the best practices in writing.
