The colon Classification was the brain child of Dr. S.R Ranganath anand came into existence in the year 1933 . Colon Classification has gained great importance in the field of library classification . Dr .S. R Ranganathan in 1924 analyzed the 11th edition of D D C and found that the scheme was not capable enough to accommodate the new subjects emerging in the field of sciences. Colon Classification has been called Analytico - synthetic scheme due to the subject analysis for classification . The Colon Classification seems difficult due to the use of complex notation but infactit was necessary to provide class numbers for micro subjects .- Book Review

The paper highlights the functions of a national library as viewed by some authorities in the field. The history, objectives, building, collection and services of the national libraries of SAARC nations are examined. The picture that emerges is that national libraries in the SAARC region are victims of neglect, political interference in administration and lack of understanding of the importance of a repository of national documentary heritage. Keywords
