Abstract

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can create, disseminate, store, bring value and manage information in a way that few could have imagined. Technological change is the major contributor to the growth and development of the information society; e-learning, e-libraries, e-health, e-governance, etc. have become pillars of the information society. The present study briefly describes the various endeavours of the government and non government organizations in Karnataka state by creating E- initiatives projects to bridge the digital divide.

Abstract

Reviews the literature on Information support to economically weaker women. Notes that woman is a component of the society and still she is least beneficiary in view of her inherited characters and roles. She has diverse information needs. This paper traces the sources of information that woman prefer, community information she requires, efforts made by the state and central governments. Also discusses the role of libraries and ICT in providing information support to women. Recommends that enough information should be provided in the needed areas and adult literacy and economic empowerment programmes should be given serious attention to enhance their access to needed information. The information needs of women farmers in these locations should therefore be tailored along the preferred needs.

Abstract

In the light of ownership claims on Knowledge Management by various professional groups, this paper highlights the role of LIS professionals in KM and discusses its implications on the profession. Observes that KM is an opportunity, traces the KM initiatives and lists the skills required to carry out the responsibilities and functions of KM. This paper also describes the implications on LIS education, professional growth and attitude required. Concludes that finding creative solutions and proactive humane approach will help LIS professionals to withstand the challenges of KM.

Abstract

The paper explores the concept of rural librarianship emphasizing the relations between rural developments of the country that is directly proportional to the development of rural based Gram Panchayat Libraries for human empowerment to build information rich society. Reviews the literature on rural libraries with reference to Karnataka State and provides glimpse of Gram Panchayat libraries in Hyderabad Karnataka region and thereby shows significance of rural librarians in making the visibility of library system and the initiation on the part of Department of Public Libraries for a functional and active Gram Panchayat Libraries.

Abstract

The libraries in school level play an important role in developing and improving the child psychology, learning capacity and also help in supporting the curriculum needs of the teachers and pupils. But it is noted that majority of the schools in India as well as in Karnataka state have no library. Even though few schools are having libraries, there is inadequate infrastructure, such as, lack of independent building, less collection kept in closed access, management of library by non-library professionals, shortage of reading room and furniture, etc. The present study is made to assess the problems of the school libraries in Gulbarga city. The paper revealed that there are 184 school libraries and the present study covered about 144 school libraries. It is also noted that of these school libraries under the study, only 88 schools are having their own libraries. The paper included the different problems such as library professionals, independent library building, collection, etc. The paper concluded with the remarks that the authority of the schools and government has to establish the libraries in their schools and also solve problems of school libraries in different aspects.

Abstract

Based on the study of two hundred and four post-graduate students of Gulbarga University, the relative importance of information sources among the post-graduate students in a university environment is emphasised. The study reveals that books, newspapers, popular magazines, class notes, notes of seniors, are the most useful sources of information. General dictionaries, subject dictionaries, subject encyclopedia and scientific periodicals are also useful sources for the post-graduate students. Memoranda, diaries and letters, CD databases, trade catalogs, theses/dissertations, microforms, laboratory notes, handbooks, human sources, course materials of Open Universities, guide to subject literature, directories, statistical sources, biographical sources, library catalog, almanacs, manuals, geographical sources, research reports, are never used by a majority of post-graduate students. Based on statistical tests, the study concludes that the personal attributes viz., gender, year of study, medium of instruction at under-graduate and post graduate level, area of habitation, stay at hostels, marital status, and frequency of visits to University library have no bearing on the use of specific sources of information.

Abstract

Reports the survey of five hundred and seventy one college libraries in Kamataka State with regard to classification of books, use of classification scheme, provision of book numbers, method used for providing book numbers, problems faced in classifying and the reasons for not classifying the books. It is found that three hundred and eighty-four of five hundred and seventy-one college libraries classify the books. DDC (209) and CC (140) are the schemes chiefly used. Book numbers are provided in two hundred and sixty-eight college libraries out of which one hundred and seventy-nine college libraries follow Ranganathan's book number. Inadequate staff (N= 216), inter-disciplinary nature of books (N=128) and identification of specific subjects (N=77) are the major problems in classifying the books. Inadequate staff (N=150). insufficient funds to purchase the classification schedules (N=77), lack of support from the authorities (N=39), and lack of interest (N=15) are the major reasons for not classifying the books. Concludes that unless the problems are solved or minimized it is difficult to expect the college librarians to classify the books.

Abstract

Studies the extent of availability and use of computers based on the data collected through questionnaire from 571 out of 931 college libraries in Karnataka State. Only 121 colleges have computers, of which only 45 colleges are using computers for library activities. Orily 14 of 45 college libraries are using the computer readable databases. Concludes that the University Grants Commission, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and Dental Council of India should provide funds for procurement of computers for libraries attached to First Grade, Education and Law, Engineering and Health Science Colleges in India so that libraries will be in a position to computerise and modernise their activities and services.

Abstract

The present study investigates the awareness and use of internet based e-information resources among school children in two selected schools of Bijapur of Karnataka State. Based on a survey of 120 students, the study emphasizes the awareness and use of e-information sources. It assesses and analyzes the acquaintance of school children with IT, awareness and use of internet, problems encountered awareness about searching e-information sources, types of sources preferred, reasons for not using e-information sources, channels preferred, and ability of them to use e-information sources.

Abstract

Career information is an important and key resource for any individual to decide one's career goal. This study deals with the identification of the career information needs of and library facilities usage by women of Savanur Taluk of Haveri District in Karnataka state. Data were collected through survey method of research by using questionnaire as data collection tool from 60 educated women of Savanur. This study assesses the career information needs of women and different types of libraries used by them and it also brings out the reasons why women are not accessing the career information from libraries. Also mentions suggestions to improve library facilities to provide effective library services on career information.
