With the Open Source Software (OSS) initiative catching up, there are many Integrated Library Automation Packages (ILAP) available. These OSS- ILAPs are comparable with any commercial ILAP. However, the success of any OSS mainly depends on the availability of the manuals and technical support. NewGenLib in an ILAP and was released in March 2005 as commercial software but declared OSS in January 2008. However, there is no detailed installation manual available. Hence an effort is made here to give a detailed step by step procedure for NewGenLib installation both on Windows and Linux operating systems. The study was carried out in 2008 and two workshops were conducted during January and August 2009 and more than 50 professionals were trained. The structure of scientific collaboration networks of the publications of the Indian Institute of Science for a span of 11 years from 1996-2006 is investigated using Bibexcel software as an analytical tool for the data derived from the Web of Science database. The study analyses the author productivity, discipline-wise and institution-wise collaboration and national and international collaboration. It is observed from the analysis that large numbers of research publications are collaborative in nature. There is a steady growth in the collaboration during the study period. The top five countries with which IISc is collaborating is: USA, Japan, France, Germany and UK. Major disciplines in which collaboration is observed are: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering and Materials Science. The top five institutions with which IISc is collaborating are: Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Science Research, Indian Institute of Technology, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and University of Madras.Keywords

Organizations' ability to collect, process and interpret information and transform information into economic value is becoming more and more important. Organizations have been described as using three types of capital: physical capital such as plant, equipment, stock; financial capital such as cash, investments, receivables; and intellectual capital. Intellectual capital (IC) encompasses intangibles such as patents, intellectual property rights, copyrights and franchises. It also includes intellectual material that has been formalized, captured and leveraged to produce higher valued assets. It represents knowledge transformed to something of value to an organization.
Annual reports have been used to investigate the IC reporting practices of business firms, and also to investigate the differences in reporting across firms in different countries. Several such studies have used content analysis as a research technique. Until recently, very few organizations have attempted to measure and assess IC. There are a variety of conceptual frameworks that can be used to classify and record IC. However, all these frameworks concentrate on business firms. In this paper an attempt is made to develop a framework to classify and record IC for academic organizations and also a sample analysis of IC as reported in the annual report is carried out. Indian Institute of Science annual reports are taken as study sample for this purpose.
The study reveals that annual reports of academic institutions can be used as an instrument in inquiring intellectual capital reporting because these institutions commonly signal what they perceive as important through the reporting mechanism. Important issues are featured, reported and discussed, whereas less important items are absent or relegated to low profile sections of the report. However, according to this preliminary study it is observed that studies focusing exclusively on annual reports risk capturing an incomplete picture of the amount of reporting organizations are engaging in, and thus an incomplete picture of the practices they are studying. Hence to get a comprehensive view, other official reports and also recorded information publicly available have to be considered. Content analysis can be used as a research method in capturing the data but to get better results this method has to be combined with other data capture methods such as interview and survey methods. In this preliminary analysis, the framework suggested is only partial and this can be further extended to include other units of analysis depending on the purpose of the study. The framework suggested can be used by other organizations and also to carry out comparative study of different organizations.

The paper describes the steps NCSI undertook for designing a SDI information system using CA SEARCH database tapes produced by American Chemical Society. Actual design work was started after defining the objectives and the design environment. A bottom-up approach to design was adopted. Starting at the base level, a clear understanding of the format and contents of CA SEARCH was obtained. The design objectives were than encompassed by gradually moving upwards in the design work. The specific design steps are: analysis and definition of CA SEARCH format, study, of information content, decision on database access elements and search strategy, generating quantitative data for file design, file structure design, batch and online search system design. The main objective of this paper is to explore the possibility of enhancing search and retrieval features of library automation package by integrating it with a discovery tool. PMB, a library automation package and Vufind, a discovery tool are used for demonstration purposes. PMB was selected as it uses simple LAMP architecture and hence is easy to install and use. But the Online Public Access (OPAC) of PMB does not have many features of new generation OAPCs. However, by integrating PMB into Vufind, which has most of the new generation OPAC features, enhanced features of the OPAC are made available in PMB itself. Also, PMB provides excellent and unique options for record import/export in various formats. This feature is used to export records from PMB and import it to Vufind. Generally, any integrated library automation package (ILAP) contains two modules: staff-client module and Online Public Access catalogue (OPAC). PMB is compatible with international standards: it makes use of Z39.50 server and supports UNIMARC format. Another unique feature in PMB is the facility to convert/ export of records using which records from one format can be converted to about 39 other formats. Though it has many good features, because it uses MySQL as back-end, it lacks many advanced search features in the OPAC. On the other hand, Vufind, a discovery tool uses Solr (Lucene java search library) as its back-end and has good search and retrieval features. For indexing bibliographic records, Vufind uses MARCSolr, through which MARC records are indexed using Solr search engine. This paper reports a study carried out to integrate into PMB search and retrieval features of Vufind.Keywords
