The access for the rural population to information sources is very limited. Public library presents various information needs to the society through its services to the community. The present study examines the findings of a survey of users of the rural public library in Dakshina Kannada district. An attempt has been made to understand and evaluate the use of the Bantwal branch public library by the users with respect to their demographic characteristics, frequency and purpose of using the library, and their satisfaction with the resources and services provided in the library. The results of the survey indicate that students and job holders in private/public sector were the regular visitors to the library, who visited the library daily or once a week, hence public libraries need to enrich their information resource collection and create better ambience and basic facilities needed to retain the visitors for longer duration. This study also suggests the transformation of existing libraries or establishing a new set up of dynamic information centres with the help of the latest IT to effectively cater to the information needs of the rural people. Keywords

Information is critical to successful implementation of responsible fisheries management at local, regional and global levels. Information, whether on paper or electronic media must be available and accessible and its content must be known to potential users. Electronic information services are crucial to the development of fisheries sector, fisheries education, research and development in India. There are four fisheries college libraries in South India which are rendering electronic information services to the users to fulfill the mandate and mission of the fisheries institutions. This paper describes the evaluation of electronic information services in the light of current status of electronic information services in fisheries college libraries in South India. It also poses the challenges these libraries and information centers face and suggests possible solutions. Keywords

Describes the importance of information for the development of fisheries sector and its contributions to the Indian economy. Stresses the need for establishment of National Fisheries Information System with the ICAR Head Quarters being the central coordinating unit, for the benefit of research workers, policy makers and administrators in the field of Fisheries Sciences. Databases on bibliographical information i.e. published research, ongoing research, etc. have to be created. The development of such a National Information System requires decentralization and the cooperation of other institutions and organizations in the country but also requires active support and cooperation from international agencies and developed nations. The services to be offered by the system are also highlighted. Keywords
