Abstract

In the previous session we were concerned with the syntax or grammar of string writing, and the mechanics of entry construction. We move on now to the semantic side of the system: that is, establishing terms which, because they are mentally associated with terms in strings, might also function as a user's access points to the alphabetical index.

Abstract

In this final Part, I shall deal only occasionally with indexing techniques, and consider instead a range of diverse topics, mostly within the field of index production and management. I shall also touch briefly upon some of the current research and development projects going on within the Subject Systems Office of the British Library, where we are exploring new ways of using PRECIS as the subject approach to a large data base. Finally, I shall touch very briefly on the related topics of indexer performance and user evaluation.
