Abstract

The concept of consortia has been in vogue in library profession for quite some time. It has taken firm ischolar_main in librarianship due to the evolution and revolution of “Digital Information”. Shrinking budget and the rate of growth of publications in digital format has encouraged librarians to view consortia as their friend. CSIRDST consortium re-designated as National Knowledge Resource Consortia (NKRC) had its beginning in 2009. Since then, Raman Research Institute is an active partner and a stake holder of this consortium. The benefits of consortia can best be assessed either by usage statistics or by analyzing the cited references of the research papers published by the scientists of an institute. In this study, the later method has been adopted to study the impact of consortium at Raman Research Institute. Cited references of the papers published prior to consortia are compared against the papers published three years after joining the consortia. It is envisaged that this study will throw light on the usage pattern of information resources with respect to subscribed content and shared content through consortia.

Abstract

A gateway named „Online Reference Zone‟ has been designed, developed and hosted on the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore centre library in an effort to enhance visibility of open source online reference sources in science and technology. . The portal lists the open access online reference resources in select subjects which will be of great use to the scientific community at large. The paper explains the process of compiling comprehensive lists of open access reference resources in select subjects in Science and Technology like Physics, Chemistry, etc. The paper explains the federated search facility which searches the given web pages at the same time has been built and also an additional feature called „Share a Link!‟ which lets the user to submit relevant links related to the site.

Abstract

The complexities involved due to various formats of Electronic Information Resources are increasing day by day. Information available on Internet is one such evident example posing problems both qualitatively and quantitatively to the user community. Design and development of Virtual Library could be a solution to this problem, which enables customizing.and streamlining the information 'products on the Internet. In this article an attempt has been made to develop Virtual Library in Mathematics, anticipating its utility to the user community.

Informetrics is a new field of specialization in library and information systems and services. It is a field which effects on abstraction of quantitative techniques as models arising out of the behaviour of data collected in different areas of library and information systems. The paper presents case studies of application of Quantitative Techniques in different operations of library management. Based on the current developments in the area, the need for recognition of Informetrics as specialised course in Advanced Courses in Library and Information Science is suggested.

Abstract

The changing scenario of looking at library and information systems as profit making organization, which inturn has resulted in subjecting them for review and control measures quite similar to any other organization, is ascertained. In this context, the author has looked at the role of performance measures in Quality Improvement Programmes of libraries. An attempt has been made to identify and enumerate 'Performance Indicators' and 'Unit of Measurement' for different library operations. Further, tools of quality management which are applicable to these operations and thereby improving the performance quality are also enlisted.
