This paper makes a comparative study of library habit among three types of school students namely, students of Ramakrishna Mission aided schools, Private English medium schools and Govt. aided schools. It is found in the study that the library habit exists among student community, which is a positive sign for a developing nation like India. It will increase the quality of reading and research. Keywords

Research productivity in Zoology, authorship pattern and nature of collaboration among the zoology scholars are studied by analyzing 236 theses and 719 thesis articles submitted by the scholars of the Zoology Department at the University of Burdwan in eleven subdivisions of Zoology during 1960-2000. The highest number of thesis submission was 64 and the highest number of article submission was 251 during the same time span 1986-1990. The highest number of theses (65) was submitted in Entomology followed by Parasitology (51), Fishery (29) and Cytology (28) respectively. The highest (48) number of theses were guided by Deb Kumar Chaudhuri. Authorship trend is towards multiauthored papers. The degree of collaboration is 0.51. The most prolific author was P.K. Choudhuri who topped the list with 80 papers during the period 1960-2000 followed by D.K. Choudhuri with 49 publications, S. Chakraborty with 49 publications, S.K. Ghosal with 45 publications, G. Majumdar with 44 publications and S.K Moitra with 44 publications. Among the top ranking journals publishing the papers are from India with 440 (61.18%) publications followed by Germany with 55(7.64%) publications, Netherlands with 45(6.25%) publications, USA with 40(5.56%) publications, China with 25(3.47%) publications and UK with 24(3.38 %) publications. Among the six state Universities of West Bengal, Burdwan University has produced highest numbers (719) of articles followed by Calcutta University with 452 articles, Kalyani University with 316 articles and North Bengal University with 77 Zoology articles during the period 1960-2000.Keywords

"Indian Economic Review" published by Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi has played a key role in the dissemination of fundamental and applied knowledge of Economics since 1952. This paper finds out the result of a bibliometric study covered in the issues of Indian Economic Review during 1998-2002. It examines authorship pattern, the degree of collaboration among authors and geographical distribution of the authors. It analyses 1653 citations appended to 68 research articles. The findings reveal that 43.25% citations were from books and 52.69% from journals. The authorship pattern study reveals that highest number of citations are from single author. The degree of collaboration in "Indian Economic Review" is 0.33 and it gradually decreases during the study period. Geographical distribution of the authors reveals that most of the contributors are from India with 48 authors (52.17%).Keywords

The paper studies the scatter of journal literature in physics. 4916 references from 38 PhD theses of Physics (Electronics, Nuclear Physics, Optics and Solid State Physics) submitted to the University of Burdwan during 1981 to 1995 are studied. The number of journals required to fulfil 25%, 50%, 75%, 90% and 100% of demands in various subjects and periods are identified.
To quantify the scatter of last 10% of references in large number of journal titles, a new scale named AB's Coefficient of Dispersion (ABDISC) is introduced as given below:
d=(y-x)/y where, 'd'= AB's Coefficient of Dispersion (ABDISC),
'x' = number of journal titles required to satisfy 90% of the references and 'y' = number of journals titles required to cover 100% of the references in the subject. ABDISC will indicate the portion of the total journal titles required to satisfy the last 10% of need in a subject or the so-called residual need that can be fulfilled by inter library loan/document delivery service.

Ranking studies are very popular. But different authors have followed different methods in allotting rank numbers when there is a tie. Whenever journal titles from two or more ranked lists are taken for comparison, all the lists need be ranked following same procedure. Otherwise, their rank numbers need be converted to uniform rank numbers before comparison to avoid any misleading results. When, a sample of 2891 journal references of physics having 309 journals were ranked in three different methods in vogue, and compared, it was found that the rank position of the same last journal title was 43, 176 and 309 in the three lists indicating a huge difference that could lead to quite misleading conclusion if compared unknowingly.
Whenever more than one title occupies the same number of citations, all of them should be given same rank number and the number of such titles baving same rank number should be added to decide the next rank number.
