- Financing Sources and Problems of SMEs in Developing Countries:A Study Based on Khulna Region of Bangladesh

In pursuit of her economic development, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) conquer leading positions in economy. The present study is conducted to analyse the problem of SMEs to collect fund in Khulna city. Data were collected from 100 SME units by using simple random technique. A structural questionnaire was developed to get the responses from different SME units in the country. For Bangladesh SMEs, it is assumed special significance for poverty reduction programme and potential contribution to the overall industrial and economic growth. Some of the constraints related SME financing are identified and some pointers for the future are provided through the study. Considering the importance this study has strived to identify those factors contribute the success of SMEs using causal model. Several factors were selected typically that affects the SME activities from pervious literature. Important factors were identified first using rotated components matrix later regression statistics was applied to find out which are statistically significant. The SME owners collect their fund basically from some sources such as money lenders, private banks, state owned banks, NGOs as well as specialised banks. They face various problems during the fund collection which are main focus in this study. In order to overcome the problems a few suggestions for the development of SMEs are given by the authors.

The present study directs towards investigating the impact of local alliance on global performance of SMEs. In order to explore such impact, a conceptual three stage model has been developed covering three main variables: strategic alliance, developing firm specific advantages (FSAs), and internationalisation. Qualitative and explorative descriptive studies on fifty SMEs of Khulna city, Bangladesh were carried out to detect the key underlying variables exist in the context. From the data recorded and archived a total of ten variables covering various types of strategic alliances were developed, in the next stage a total of 20 FSAs were identified which can be obtained through such alliances and in final stage again ten variables were detected that describe different internationalisation competencies which can be developed through building those FSAs. This study contributed toward developing a model for successful alliance-FSAs-internationalisation framework from the observations of the respondents firms.Keywords

This study focuses on the factors that motivate the female entrepreneurs in metros and small cities of a developing country. Explorative and quantitative study was carried out to detect the exact scenario in the metro city of Dhaka and relatively smaller yet important city of Khulna. Women entrepreneurs of Dhaka city showed higher degree of motivations behind their entrepreneurial venturing in the motivating factors of personal traits, macro environment, education and training, financing, business infrastructure and inputs, investment security and safeguards, scope for internationalization, economic freedom, legislation, family, and innovation and creativity whereas women entrepreneurs of Khulna city tend to show higher importance on social setup, job and profession, easiness of entry and exit, network and management skills. The t-test result shows that there is no difference between women entrepreneurs of Dhaka and Khulna on business infrastructure and inputs, investment security and safeguards, legislation, easiness of entry and exit, and network, whereas, there is a difference between women entrepreneurs of Dhaka and Khulna on social set-up, personal traits, macro environment, education and training, financing, scope for internationalization, economic freedom, job and profession, family, and innovation & creativity.Keywords

The aim of this study was to analyze and evaluate competencies practiced by female entrepreneurs. A sample of 135 female entrepreneurs was selected to judge the management competencies. From this study, it is found that female entrepreneurs are in better position in the skills of organizing, motivating, liaising, communicating, group dynamics, decision making, problem solving, and dedication to work whereas in relative weak position in planning, leading, controlling, negotiation, risk assuming, and creativity and innovation. The result of the study also detected positive correlation among female entrepreneurial venturing and the skills of planning, leading, organizing, motivating, communication, risk assuming, decision making, problem solving, creativity and innovation, and dedication to work. This study concludes that there is a positive significant linear relationship exists between the women entrepreneurship and managing qualities.Keywords
