Renal mucormycosis is an uncommon cause of acute renal failure and usually occurs in association with an immunocompromised state. However, the illness may occur in the absence of an underlying condition. The diagnosis relies chiefly on microbiological or histopathological documentation of fungal infection, and is often delayed. The outcome is frequently unsatisfactory, though prompt treatment and surgical excision may be associated with survival. We report two pediatric patients with acute renal failure where the diagnosis of mucormycosis was missed. Our findings emphasize the need for a high index of clinical suspicion and histological confirmation.References
