This paper reports that the converter efficiency can be achieved by dynamically changing the number of active phases depending on the load. We provide solution related to the transient response of the converter when the number of active phases is changed. The problem arises because the current in the individual phases of the interleaved Buck converter will not be equal immediately after the controller has changed the number of active phases. The current equalisation scheme relies on the measurement of the output current and the knowledge of a few converter parameters and it does not require a measurement of the current in each phase. A digital PWM modulator has been designed that allows the current equalisation scheme to work. Simulations and measurements for a four phase interleaved Buck converter are presented in this paper.Keywords

The optical communication system has many advantages at long distance communication. Semiconductor optical amplifier based Mach Zehnder Interferometer plays an important role in fast optical communication. In this work the proposed SOA based MZI switch is used for all optical logic and arithmetic operations. In this architecture the continuous wave laser source and control signal pass through the Mach Zehnder Interferometer. Control signal at this wave length is split at the coupler and more power passes through one arm. The input data signal is fed to the coupler, which splits the signal equally. The resultant signals then propagates simultaneously through the two arms of the interferometer. This architecture can be used to perform all optical processing of signals like half adder, full adder, de multiplexer etc. MZI switch is a very powerful technique to realize ultrafast switching. The physical mechanism behind the working of MZI switch is cross-phase modulation (XPM). Here the gain saturation induced by beam reduces carrier density inside one SOA, which in turn increases the refractive index only in the arm through which the light passes. As a result, an additional phase shift can be introduced on the CW beam because of the XPM, and the CW wave is directed towards the bar port during each one bit. Now it is clear that in the absence of control signal, the incoming signal (CW signal) exits through the cross port (lower channel) of MZI. In this case no light is present in the bar port. But in the presence of the control signal, the incoming signal exits through the bar port of the MZI.Keywords

Thin films of Tin dioxide (SnO2) thin films are a special class of metal oxides that combine high electrical conductivity with optical transparency. Such Transparent Conducing Oxide (TCO) provides an important component for optoelectronic applications. Spray pyrolysis deposition for thin film preparation is a simple and relatively cost effective technique. This work consists of the synthesis of thin films of tin dioxide using automated spray pyrolysis technique and its structural characterization. Tin oxide films were prepared from different concentrations of the precursor solution. These films were found to be transparent at low concentration of the precursor solution. Characterization of these prepared films using X-ray diffraction technique is presented and discussed. Spray deposited thin films of tin dioxide have a number of applications, mainly as electrode materials in solar cells.Keywords

Chromatic dispersion is a critical factor that limits the quality of transmitted optical signal in high speed fiber optic communication systems. Chromatic dispersion occurs due to the propagation delay spread of different spectral components of the transmitted signal. This leads to the pulse broadening of transmitted signal. In order to operate the fiber optic communication system with a sufficiently low bit error rate and to minimize the performance degradation caused by pulse distortion and broadening, dispersion compensation is needed. The purpose of this project is to compensate the chromatic dispersion using fiber Bragg grating and optical phase conjugation techniques. Simulation results will be obtained using OPTSIM software version 5.3. Effect of chromatic dispersion in an optical fiber link was analyzed. Simulation using Fiber Bragg grating by varying its grating period and linear chirp coefficient was obtained.Keywords

The maximum channel density for digital transmission can be achieved by increase the bit rate. When the bit rate cross the 2.5Gbps , the PMD degrade the transmission characteristics. PMD occurs in single mode fiber and because of PMD it impossible to transmit data reliability at high speed. This effects results the widening the pulses and reduce the capacity of transmission of the fiber. This work analyzes the effect of PMD in optical fiber in one hindered km link fiber. The eye diagram, Q value and bit rate for analyzing the PMD. Also an optical compensation technique by which the effect of PMD can be reduced is also analyzed. bit error rate can be achieved by simulating with OptSim 5.3, which includes the algorithms to guarantee the maximum possible accuracy and correct results.Keywords

In this work, the design and development of a DC-DC Converter using a two stage buck-boost operation is discussed. This converter is suitable for low power application such as a matrix LED lighting system. The advantage of this converter is that instead of using two controlled switches as in case of a conventional converter, this circuit uses one MOSFET as a switch. The circuit uses two inductors and two capacitors as energy transferring elements that are able to provide a good quality, high efficiency power supply to the load. The design of TSBB converter is analyzed with closed loop control using a PI controller circuit. Even with smaller values of inductor and capacitor a highly efficient power supply can be made. The main feature of this circuit compared to the other circuits proposed previously is that have a galvanic isolation between the load and the source is provided. Thus, by a suitable controller and galvanic isolation, the ripple magnitude in the output is reduced considerably. A simulation model of the TSBB converter with results is presented.Keywords

Reactive power compensation is an important aspect in the control of distribution systems. Reactive current in addition to increasing the distribution system losses, introduces various power quality problems like, harmonics, voltage sag, swell and poor load power factor. These power quality issues result in the malfunction of sensitive equipments. A Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) proves to be a viable solution for the mitigation of such power quality issues. The aim of this paper is to compare an optimized PI and a Fuzzy controlled DSTATCOM for reactive power compensation and harmonic mitigation. Here the PI controllers are first optimized by using error minimization criteria through Genetic algorithms and then replaced by a Fuzzy controller. Through various simulations it is concluded that the transient response of fuzzy controllers is better than the optimized PI controllersKeywords

In this paper the Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) is considered. The feedforward gain adjustment is done by using adaptive technique and feedforward gain compensation by passivity-based technique is presented. The adaptation of feedforward gain is considered by using MIT rule and the effect of variation of parameter values and adaptation gain on the response of the system is simulated. But to achieve more stable system, lyapunov stability theorem is used for parameter adjustment. It has been shown that the adjustment rule guarantees that error goes to zero. Finally input-output stability theorem is used to construct adjustment rules for the adaptive system. The passivity theorem is applied to construct adjustment laws. The compensating network is introduced so that the transfer function relating the error is Strictly Positive Real (SPR). The compensator is designed by using Kalman – Yakubovich (KY) Lemma. Simulation results are furnished after implementing the adaptive techniques. Algorithm for the design of compensator using KY Lemma is also presentedKeywords

This paper proposes the application of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique to solve Optimal Power Flow with inequality constraints on Line Flow. To ensure secured operation of power system, it is necessary to keep the line flow within the prescribed MVA limit so that the system operates in normal state. The problem involves non-linear objective function and constraints. Therefore, the population based method like PSO is more suitable than the conventional Linear Programming methods. This approach is applied to a six bus three unit system and the results are compared with results of Linear Programming method for different test cases. The obtained solution proves that the proposed technique is efficient and accurate.Keywords

Background/Objectives: The rapid growth of demand for ever-increasing data rate and wireless services results in spectrum scarcity. Cognitive radio technology is used as solution for this problem. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Spectrum sensing is the key mechanism used to share the spectrum in cognitive radio which will solve the spectrum scarcity problem. Conventional cognitive radio is operated in half-duplex mode which fist sense the spectrum hole and transmit if spectrum hole is found. This listen and talk approach has the constraint of losing transmission opportunities during sensing or has the Risk of undetectable collisions during transmission. This problem can be rectified by operating the cognitive radio in full duplex mode. Findings: Modern full-duplex wireless radio transceivers will be capable of simultaneous spectrum sensing and transmission. But one of the main issues in the full duplex simultaneous sensing and transmission is the residual self-interference.In this paper a full duplex cognitive radio with two antennas (2x2 MIMO) which will provide for higher physical isolation is proposed with the self-interference cancelling technique. The technique consists of a power control and interference cancellation filter or self-interference whitening filter. Since the full-duplex system, radios transmit and sense simultaneously in the same frequency band at the same time, providing improvement in spectral efficiency over a half-duplex system. Applications/Improvements: The result shows that the proposed full duplex cognitive radio provides spectral efficiency of 5.2 bits/Hz/sec at 11dB SNR but the conventional half duplex cognitive radio provides only 2 bits/Hz/sec.Keywords

Objectives: This paper develops an algorithm to generate automatically, a feature vector using various statistical texture features of trabecular mandible from digital Orthopantomogram (OPG). These statistical features are computed using Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrices (GLCM) of mandible structure. Analysis: For this paper, region of interest is trabecular mandible bone present in lower jaw. Mandible Segmented from OPG is taken as input to the algorithm. GLCM of this mandible is calculated at four angles viz., 00, 450, 900 and 1350 and for two gray scale intensities viz., 128 and 256. Various texture features are calculated from each of these GLCMs. These statistical features are compared and analyzed. Findings: 100 digital OPGs are used for analysis of statistical texture features. Four texture features contrast, viz., correlation, energy, homogeneity are calculated for the four angles mentioned above. Improvement: Texture analysis is performed on various types of images since last 50 years. Locating systemic disease features (e.g., Osteoporosis) from OPG is an upcoming research area. In this area, it is observed that comparatively less literature is available which uses GLCM texture features. The algorithm proposed here devices a texture feature vector for mandible. The main objective of the paper is automatic image registration using discrete wavelet transform. In this paper to register the images I use the discrete wavelet transform. The characteristic of the approach is that the image is sub divided in to four components that as Less-Less, Less-High, High-Less and High-High from that we took Less-Less for the further processing. The DWT is applied for both the reference and sensed image to extract the LL components and the feature power points are extracted using scale invariant feature transform to match the two images. Objectives: In the present study digitally recorded Intra Oral Periapical radiographs (IOPA) are investigated. Methods/Analysis: This paper presents an innovative algorithm for automatic segmentation of the digital IOPA radiograph in one or more qualified regions of interest. Segmentation of IOPA is done repetitively till all teeth in the image are extracted. These segmented images resulting from this algorithm will now have one tooth in one image. Findings: A radiograph with exactly one tooth in image is extremely useful for further study and analysis of individual tooth in many and diverse applications of computer assistance in processing of dental radiographs. The segmentation algorithm proposed in this paper, necessarily being a spatial segmentation method, separates regions of interest without any loss or alterations in the data. The algorithm works successfully on 76 digital IOPA radiographs out of 80 images in test data. Novelty/Improvements: The algorithm proposed in the paper is fully automatic and does not require any human intervention. The segmentation algorithm proposed separates one tooth with its perimeter region intact in one image. The number of output images generated are equal to number of teeth in input IOPA.Keywords

Objectives: Panoramic x-ray is a medical imaging technique used in dentistry. This paper aims to present fully automatic segmentation algorithm to extract lower jaw and mandible from panoramic x-ray. Methods/Analysis: Panoramic x-rays provide features of various diseases like advanced periodontal diseases, cysts, tumors, impacted teeth, fractures in lower or upper jaw, etc. Image processing techniques are applied on these images to detect diseases automatically. Segmentation is an inevitable step in automation to extract disease features. Majority existing literature use semi-automatic method for segmentation of panoramic x-ray. The algorithm proposed in this paper is fully automatic method of segmentation. Findings: Panoramic x-rays give entire view of mouth and facilitate assessment of hard tissue structures of the facial area rather than assessment of dental carries. Segmentation of panoramic x-rays is an inevitable step in automating diagnosis of oral disorders like, tumor, cysts, fracture, etc. In this paper, an algorithm is developed for automatic segmentation of lower jaw and then mandibular bone in dental digital panoramic x-ray. Dental digital panoramic x-ray is a good quality image which does not require noise removal. The segmentation algorithm uses novel strips method where input image is subdivided in number of strips. These strips are further processed to separate lower jaw and mandible from input image. The algorithm is fully automatic and does not involve human intervention at any level. Paper presents analysis of number of strips as 3, 5, 7 and 9. The algorithm presented in this paper gives 93% success for segmentation of lower jaw and 90% success in segmentation of mandible structure when strip count is 5. Applications/Improvement: Strip method focuses ROI and ignores components like teeth, spinal cord shadow, etc. Central strip is useful to segment lower jaw whereas side strips are useful to detect mandible edge points.Keywords

Oil spills are one of the most visible signs of pollutions in our environment. The main objective of the paper is to detect the oil spill using discrete wavelet transform. Discrete wavelet transform helps to decompose the image into four components those are LL, HL, LH, and HH. Here LL component images are used and GLCM applied to extract the texture feature of the image. This method effectively finds the oil spill compared to conventional methods.Keywords
