Objectives: The objective of this paper is to study the characteristics of different biological cells and materials that act as optical fibers and simulation of an optical fiber mimicking their characteristics. Methods/Statistical analysis: For the simulation procedure we suitably choose materials for optical fibers. The study was initiated with SM800 core and silica cladding. The entire simulation has been done using optical fiber toolbox OFT2.1 available in MATLAB R2014a. The operating wavelength has been taken as 400-2000 nm. We have tried here to simulate and design an optical fiber similar to the characteristics of Muller cells which are the living optical fibers in vertebrate retina. Findings: A number of electrical and optical field intensity patterns have been simulated by varying different wavelengths in the whole range i.e. 400-2000 nm and also by keeping the diameter of the optical fiber identical to that of Muller cells for the sake of maintaining similarity. After plotting the graph we found that the intensity increases with increase in wavelength Thus due to inversion property of Muller cells the optical intensity pattern got inverted in our designed fibre like it is in the Muller cell as compared to the normal available trend valid for physical optical fibres. We perceive the red light more efficiently as compared to the blue light. It has also been found that the intensity remains almost uniform in the visible range. After the visible range intensity has changed abruptly. As we know in the visible range Muller cells behave most efficiently for transmitting images, our simulated fibre also serves the purpose similar to that. Application/Improvements: This study of optical fiber can potentially be applied to improve the imaging quality of different biomedical and optical instruments, mainly operating within the visible optical frequency ranges. Keywords

A study on fractal geometry based image compression has been carried out in Red-Green-Blue (RGB), Hue Saturation Intensity (HIS) and modified HSI colour space and a comparative study has been carried out on Lena and Pine images. The modified HSI scheme incorporates the concept of non linearity in the saturation of the colour in the image. The nonlinear model of HSI scheme is more realistic approach than the traditional HSI colour space. The output results have been obtained in the form of compressed image. In modified non-linear model, the processing speed and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) have been found to yield greater value compared to the other method but compression ratio has been obtained with lower values. The non-linear saturation, despite being a more realistic phenomenon, the self-similarity in the image may be lower and this may be considered as the major reason for lower compression ratio and higher processing speed. Keywords

Color Image compression has become an important technology to decrease memory space and to reduce transmission time. The present study provides comparative values between RGB and YCbCr color spaces with respect to PSNR, execution time and compression ratio. Fractal coding is a valuable method which utilizes for compression of color image. This method is most suitable for irregular shape of images. Long encoding times still remain as main disadvantage of this compression technique. A hybrid fractal coding technique based on YCbCr scheme and Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) with quadtree and isosceles triangle segmentation is proposed in the present study. The study needs six phases, first, conversion of input RGB image to YCbCr scheme; second, the resulting image (YCbCr) is partitioned separately based on quadtree approach and isosceles triangle segmentation approach; third, DCT is applied to every block of the partition, fourth, scanning of every block value and zigzag manner is applied to prevent zero co-efficient; fifth, both quad tree and isosceles triangle segmentation approaches are applied separately for having partitioned resulting image; sixth, to compress the image, Run Length Encoding (RLE) approach is utilized. Test results demonstrate that proposed strategy gives higher compression ratio, PSNR value with high processing speed without degrading the image quality. Keywords

Objectives: The objective of this research work is a prototype design of a new ramp type escalator utilizing the magnetic levitation technology for smooth, fastest and balanced traveling. Methods: The structure of this proposed escalator is modified so as to function as a ramp surface. The traditional electrical and electromechanical escalators are replaced by the high-temperature superconducting coils and magnetic bearings. This research work proposes a methodology expected that the method may be a utility system for the future days. The Electrodynamic Suspension (EDS) system has been utilized in the ramp escalator. Findings: The proposed prototype design of maglev ramp type escalator system is totally different from today's escalators system in the context of its design, structure, technology and operation though its objectives are same. This proposed escalator has been found in animation to better speed with greater passenger safety along with the ease and comfort of passengers during traveling. Analyzing and comparing the various characteristic of the present escalator, the proposed escalator adapting the principle of magnetic levitation technology with high-temperature type II superconductor found the better result in the context of low maintenance cost, fewer staffs for maintenance and in saving the time. There will be no interruption in traveling for a sudden power loss for a certain period of time; the system will work properly due to the superconducting phenomena the current will flow indefinitely in the ramp escalator system. Novelty/Improvement: The proposed prototype design of a ramp type escalator utilizing magnetic levitation technology with the EDS system is a novel concept. Keywords

Objectives: The present paper has attempted a quantitative study to measure the amount of off centricity of the iris from its normal position. Methods/Statistical Analysis: The eye image having squint has been taken from real life image (CASIA DATABASE). First of all the central position of the eye opening between the eyelids are detected by Matlab code. Then the distance between the locations of the squint eye are taken by using 3X3 spatial filter with a local searching method. Findings: Squint is the off centre location of iris and pupils and may occur either in one eye or both of the eyes and both male and female persons may have squint. The local searching method terminates when the centre of the filter coincides with the centre of the pupil of the squint eye. The filters are moved from the centre of the eye by coinciding the centre of the spatial filter with the centre of the eye in vertical, horizontal and angular directions. Application/Improvement: By this process noises will be reduced which are prevalent in squint eye. The number of pixels responsible for the exact locations may be compensated by making the successive position of the filters bit overlapping which will in turn reduce the possibility of having checker board appearance in the output of the image. Keywords
