Forest tree improvement programmes start wilh the study of available variation in the entire range of species distribution and delimitation of population capable of providing the best tree. This is done by the provenances tests. In North Raipur Division of Madhya Pradesh teak plantations were raised from the seeds obtained from Maharashtra (Kanara origin). Burma Kerala (Nilambur) Madhya Pradesh (Betul and Tenduchus) and Karnataka (Kakankoti) and sample plots were laid out in 1938 as a part of the All India Teak Seed Origin Co-oprrative Experiment. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the growlh performances of these provenances has been presented in this paper. Out side its natural habitat, successful Chir pine plantations were raised in the beginning of the twentieth century in Balaghat Division of Madhya Pradesh with a view to provide a nurse crop to the Sal seedlings in grassy blanks. The growth and yield data of the sample plots laid out in these plantations in 1924 have been analysed and studied. The data analysis shows that the site quality conforms to All India Chir Q. I/II; the total volume production per hectare varies from four to two times of the yield table figures; it is a fast growing species; and its rotation of maximnm volume production is around 40 years, It is suggested that grassy blanks in Sal forests in frosty localities may be planted with Chir seeds of Supkhar origin to increase the productivity of forests and a status of provenance be accorded to Supkhar Chir as it has tropicalised in this locality.- A Mathematical Model for Classifying the forest Types with Particular Reference to Himachal Pradesh

Methods for analysing the logging cost and preparation of 150-Cost Curves have been given in this paper. The analysis, which is based on the cost data of Madhya Pradesh, shows that log production cost varies from Rs. 30/- to Rs. 50/- per M3, haulage by bullock cart is economical upto a distance of 7 km.,log transportation by rail is cheaper than by truck for a load more than 50 km. 150 Cost Curves for truck haulage cum rail transport and truck haulage cum truck transport have also been constructed and method illustrated.- Taxonomic Enumeration of Common Plants of Changbhakhar Forest Division, Madhya Pradesh

This paper deals with the study undertaken in Chachpur compartment 13 of Pabar Valley Division (Himachal Pradesh) to find out the relationships between diameter, height, crown projection area, ischolar_main spread area and ischolar_main depth of standing and naturally upischolar_mained deodar trees. A positive correlation was observed between these characters. The ratio between crown projection area and ischolar_main spread area is about 5, and between height and ischolar_main depth about 17 thereby suggesting that a precise knowledge about these relationships will prove of great practical value in predicting the site quality and minimum exploitable soil depth, in making the choice of species and deciding the initial spacing to be adopted for a plantation, in evolving suitable stand density indices and in deciding the method of fertilizer application.- Some Studies on Correlation of Crown Projection Area and Bole Diameter in Sal (Shorea robusta) as an Aid in Thinning

Thinning is a function of numbers and the numbers left at different stages (regime) determine the development of the crop. Based on the analysis of auction results, the price trends of second grade timber logs of Teak (Tectona grandis). Sal (Shorea robusta), Bija (Pterocarpus marsupium), Haldu (Abina cordifolia) and Saja (Terminalia tomentosa) have been discussed and compared. It has been concluded that Teak logs fetch a much higher prices per m5 as compared to logs of other species. There is a definite trend in price incetase with increase om girth for all species. Systematic analyais of auction results is essential to understand the dynamics of price tread. In this paper an attempt has been made to analyse the auction results of teak grade-II logs of Taku Depot for the years 1970-71 and 1971-72.
