Abstract

Some important observations on the present status in production and delivery of bamboo planting materials (PMs) have been presented. A number of strategies to deal with the issues are suggested. Immediate emphasis has to be made on operational efficiency of bamboo Propagation Nurseries, species specific technology focusing priority species and requirement of many selected Candidate Plus Clumps (CPC) to supply the huge amount of vegetative parts for mass scale clonal production of bamboo PMs. Establishment of well equipped bamboo propagation nursery in different parts of the country would cater the need of supplying quality PMs of local priority bamboo species. Much importance is given on the necessity to have information, sourcing, collection and safe transportation of bamboo PMs. Further selection of superior seedlings (juvenile selection) by taking advantage of bamboo seeding and multiplication of these seedlings through macroproliferation, and identification of diverse seeding populations in a bamboo species and their centralization to establish a 'Bamboo Seed Orchard' have also been suggested as mid- and long-term strategy. Emphasis has been laid on the need of using PMs with wide genetic base for introduction of exotic bamboo species for raising commercial plantations.

Abstract

A growth study "as conducted for ten years on the undisturbed clumps of Bambusa vulgaris, B. balcooa, B. longispiculata, B. tulda and Melocanna baccifera by planting their vegetative propagules. Study revealed that full grown culm production gradually increased upto 5th year of planting in case of Bambusa species. In Bambusa species production of culms and their growth were found to reach the maximum in five to seven years of planting. After that period culm production gradually decreased and growth of the culm produced culm in subsequent years was not different than the previous years. Similarly clump girth expansion in these Bambusa species was rapid upto the 5th and 6th year of plantation but with reduced expansion rate in the subsequent years. In M. baccifera both culm production and clump expansion continued upto the end of the study period (10 years) with increased rate after the 5th year of clump age. Considering the clump expansion pattern 5m spacing between the planting stock is prescribed only for Bambusa species. Initiation of felling operation after 5 to 7 years of planting is also suggested for these species. Further study is suggested for prescribing the planting space of M. baccifera. Initiation of harvesting is tentatively, for this species, prescribed after 7 to 8 years of planting.

Abstract

Size and weight of both glumed and deglumed seeds of five different bamboo species of Bangladesh were measured and their shape noted. Seed germination and longevity were also studied. It was found that the fresh seeds germinated better then stored ones. The seed longevity period varied among the species from one to two months and could be increased upto 18 months when seeds were stored over silica gel in a desiccator.

Abstract

Dendrocalamus longispathus (Kurz) Kurz is a very useful bamboo species naturally growing in the forests of north east India and neighbouring countries. The natural stock of the species is getting depleted and availability has also been decreasing alarmingly in Tripura, Mizoram and Chittagong Hill Tracts due to high demand and recent sporadic to gregarious flowering. The species distribution in local forests, behaviour of flowering clumps, inter seeding period (flowering cycle), seed ripening, raising of seedling have been studied and reported. Further highlighted the utilization of different types of planting materials and mentioned the key steps in plantation raising to assist the restocking work of this species.
